Telkom's mobile network hit hard by lockdown

Telkom's mobile network has taken a hit in recent weeks, with users experiencing slower download speeds and higher latency when compared to the period before the coronavirus lockdown started.

Over the last few weeks, Telkom customers have voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the performance of the operator's fixed-LTE connectivity in particular.

Where? Mine has been excellent as usual.
Northcliff, it also used to be excellent but lately it's a shadow of its former self, mine started before lockdown, it doesn't work downstairs, fortunately my flat is on the first floor and even there I occasionally get intermittent disconnections.

Let's be honest NOBODY is going to benefit from temporary spectrum allocation. This kind of thing will take weeks for planning and months for implementation and testing.

Mybb needs to be more realistic about the narrative here.

It is surprising it deteriorated only that much. What do people expect?
A network is designed and supposed to be hit hard, isn't it?

Im in pta, lucky I guess.

I would have thought that mobile networks would be under less strain during the lockdown, especially from middle-income users who mostly have ADSL or fibre at home and therefore would be using less mobile data than normal.

All good centurion side

WFH and more streaming than usual is pushing this to the limit, this is the highest its ever gone

look after your own customers first before selling data which equals time on the server. you should always keep extra time data usage as if you expect all your customer to use the service at once. dont work on averages. if your service can not handle the traffic then you have sold something that you can not supply. then it also means you have advertised something you might not have. in fact that is breaking the law in my little mind. i also find it strange that on the day that the lock down started cables( not one but two) broke and interrupted the service.
when i bought my service i was assured that i will get UP TO( the magic bullet syndrome) 100 Mbps. and at first it was close = 85 Mbps. when i pointed that out i was told that i was promised UP TO factor. two years down the line and it is down to 18 on a regular basis and on rare ocasions 32 Mbps down load. but 1.9 to 3.2 upload.
if you play online games that is a killer because the latency hovers between 250 ms and 480 ms.

It'll be interesting to find out how much usage takes place between 00h00 and 07h00. I need an explanation on why they throttle and shape night data on prepaid.

This, it takes a bloody pandemic for ICASA to release spectrum, temporarily. Pathetic.

They're rather interested in pursuing the WOAN and other failed ideas like the Post Office 1Kg limit.

My mbps has been less than one and yet I pay R1100 a month for 20mbps uncapped. I was not happy being forced to use Telkom but I had no choice. I pay for 20mbps in order to study and do online work. However, due to the ridiculously poor signal and speed Ive been unable to do either for the 5 minths since I joined Telkom. Its also a poor show that our installments haven't been reduced in this trying time of no income and forced policies of stay at home.

There are way more mobile subscribers, you'll also be surprised how many middle income people don't have fibre or ADSL.

The LTE service should get the same sort of attention that fibre is getting. Up the speed a bit and take away the FUP on all account. I think that is the biggest problem and not all knows about it.

I have sadly been accused by Vusikhaya Nquma from Telkom's ICASA/ Executive Escalation Department of having more than 1 device connected to my service which is exhausting the line, given Telkom's inability to deliver on a 4Mbps Uncapped line which they sold me more than a year and a half ago. This lie was submitted to ICASA where I have reported them for poor quality services. This article by my broadband is quite helpful as it strengthens my case against the lies of Telkom who does not want to accept responsibility for their poor services. the more we report to ICASA on the poor quality of services of Telkom the better, then it means that they cannot make up stories and lie. My situation for the past 3 weeks in Durban, average download speed 0.50mb.

Logged 2 support tickets but still nothing has changed so I canceled my contract. Quite happy this will be my last month with telkom. I will never use they services again.
