Just checked out Telkom's new website, its an improvement, but they could still do better. Thought this was interesting...

With regards to the 3 gig cap they state

Telkom will not cut the service or bill for additional usage however the restriction becomes worse towards the end of the month when the customers that do reach their 3 Gigabyte Cap contend for the same restricted bandwidth. The counter is re-set at the beginning of each month. Local traffic is not affected. Telkom are however looking at ways of redesigning the capping system to optimise user satisfaction.

If they consider total capping at 3 gigs then, I think they better find out wot user satisfaction is.

So lets hope that we keep our local cap.

I read that as saying :-

Telkom are going to stop users trying to squeeze as much out of their accounts at the end of the month as possible.

Thank G0d we've got some forward thinking ISP's and that 3gig is no longer neccessary to settle for.

At the end of the day pirates prefering to download movies are screwing it up for all of us. And by the way : bandwidth capping is evident in the UK as well - please go check out their offerings on BT and AOL.

Piracy is the biggest cause of ISP's capping accounts. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I would rather see all of us having a quality voip experience than some cheap skate trying to get his hands on a pirate dvd. If you can afford Adsl then surely you should be able to buy your own movies and music. By the way the quality of an original cd is by far superior to pirate mp3's.

If you require gigabytes of p2p bandwidth - do as we did - put up your own infrared and directional wireless links.

Gerry, it's not p2p screwing things up, it's Telkom's greed and lack of competition. Our DSL products are roughly 500% overpriced. Unless you can somehow make the (highly unlikely) argument that South Africans on average download over five times as many pirate movies as people in any other country in the entire world, then you really cannot argue that it's OK to pay five times more, for slower connections, with much tinier caps than overseas.

Most ISPs in other countries deal with p2p by using (technologically) shaping etc. and (financially) economies of scale - 95% light users subsidise 5% heavy users, combined with reasonable caps like 30gb. They achieve this simply by offering a product that millions of ordinary users can afford. If the products were reasonably priced, the potential SAn market for DSL is probably at least 500,000 households - in fact more likely over 1,000,000. But one reason Telkom doesn't want that to happen is that everyone would then use VoIP, and that would destroy the massive profit margins they enjoy on local call charges. They are stunting DSL deliberately to hold back VoIP. They can do this because they're the only provider. Telkom is **** scared of broadband because they raping us on call charges and now they know VoIP is coming.

Erm, ja nee. Bt.com is basically begging me to pay 29.99 squid a month for a 2mb (thats 5x our fastest) connection with 30gig cap (10x) which according to xe.com is worth precisely R367.025.

Not really the same thing, as for p2p- alot of very legal stuff gets shared too, and these users shouldn't suffer because other users cant see the need
