Now I got to laugh my arse off at this one, Telkom talking about what great information security services they offer. Take a look at the great service on offer:

"To this end, Telkom not only provides Security Consulting, Security Auditing services, Risk Assessment, Vulnerability scanning, Malicious Code protection, Policy Development, Firewall Management, Surveillance and Identity Management services, but also provides the IT infrastructure surrounding your business, secure hosting thereof and one global service level agreement. What more could any CEO want from a managed security provider," said Flaxman.

* 4x7 monitoring, analysis and support of security network elements.
* Skilled staff with the technical expertise and competency to manage and support operational functions.
* New infrastructure procurement or upgrades and handled by the MSP who typically manages equipment and software that is owned or leased.
* More timely and accurate knowledge of security threats and potential incidents handled by a team of skilled specialists.
* Telkom has contact with highly qualified and specialised international security experts who can be brought in to diagnose and resolve customer issues. For more information on outsourcing information security visit www.telkom.co.za

Great Telkom, that's fantastic! Now how about providing proper locks on the two Telkom boxes in my road? No, scooby wire is not sufficient! (I'll post the pics when I have the spool developed).

You know what I find amusing about this thread - the fact that those Telkomonopoly adverts "the network that networking people use..." [or whateva] are never screened anymore - I used to PMSL whenever they were screened - a big monopolistic joke they were...:)

yeah right. the "network that networking people are forced to use" is more like it!

As for their NOC - its nowhere near as good as DDs. I have seen both, in detail...

I would rather entrust my stuff with someone else.

Perhaps they have honed their skills with booting people of the net so they make more out of What used to be the Seven Rand call... which is now over Nine Rand

I'm still concerned about the scooby wire that's keeping my local Telkom box closed!

Here's an idea - take off the scooby wire and put a padlock on it.
Then stick a piece of paper to the box which says :-

"Hi, I was concerned over the security of this box, so I padlocked it.
Should you want the key, please contact me at ..."

:D

I would trust my network with someone else. I know who I am dealing with and I don't trust a company that employs people with criminal records.

Lol, what other ISP's allow their support desk to see a user's password?
If you only knew the number of VISP that do, I think it would scare you (I've seen a number store it in an access database or excel spread sheet).
Besides the actual applications that contain it, most of the radius server logs contain it. So anyone who gets access to that gets hold of it then you are screwed anyway.

Hey IC - I got a copy of the global SLA no problem... Only problem is that it is under a NDA addressed specifically to the company (as most Telkom contracts typically are).
What in specific where you interested in seing in the SLA?

Actually, it does cover ADSL, in a "generic" kind of way. The SLA covers service levels, not particular services. the services are then bound to a SLA in a seperate Doc. "Generic" services suck as ADSL, POTS, leased circuits etc are automatically covered under the lowest level of the SLA.
So in essence, he was telling the truth when he said it was a "global SLA"...
