Telkom"s VDSL2 capped and uncapped data tarrifs for residential use is ABSURD !!!!

Who is even willing to pay those ridiculous prices, let alone be able to afford them?

Look at this scenario.............. 1000 RICH South Africans paying R2000 monthly for VDSL2 = R2 Million
...............100 000 Average South Africans paying R400 monthly for VDSL2 = R40 Million

Telkom go figure !!!!

Ripping off South Africans for broadband needs to come to an abrupt end and allow the masses to (ALL) benefit from world class Broadband, keeping Telkom and who ever else Smiling to the bank !!!!:)

Oh haai there...

Have you factored in the maintenance costs of 1000 VDSL2 lines as opposed to 100000?

And a VDSL customer can use up a whole lot more of the expensive international bandwidth than a 1Mb customer, But yes, having an economy of scale will bring down the price eventually. Same reason Samsung will charge R315000 for a new 60inch OLED 4K resolution TV instead of R4999 a Game. IN TIME!

Since there are already over 860 000 ADSL lines and those earn Telkom at minimum 241 million a month, would the costs for maintaining any ADSL lines that went VDSL be suddenly higher?

I've got a 20Meg VDSL line, it's about 100 bucks more expensive than a 4Meg line. Worth it if you already paying for the 4Meg.

Also, it's not VDSL2, its only VDSL (ITU G.993.1).

Dr JohnZoidberg

This 20 Meg VDSL line that you have, is the ISP Telkom? Would it be suitable for Apple TV or ROKU HD ??
How can I go about applying for this at only R100 more than the 4 Meg ADSL line.

First off you need to be in one of the areas where Telkom has rolled out their new network upgrades. Secondly you will need to find somebody at Telkom that actually understands what VDSL is and how to activate it. It also requires that you get a new VDSL capable modem.

Pricing wise it costs me R540 for a 20Mbit VDSL circuit compared to R425 for a 4/10Mbit ADSL circuit. The majority of the cost lies in the data, Afrihost has some affordable capped packages which can take full advantage of the 20Mbit speeds. Check here: http://www.afrihost.com/site/product/adsl_capped?src=website_nav (you can currently get 100GB for R399 from AH).

I would suggest you contact Telkom on either Facebook or Twitter and get somebody there to check what line speed you are capable of. The people in the call centre are useless, don't bother even wasting your time.

EDIT: And yes it will rock any streaming service that works on the Roku or AppleTV.

Sounds great but the data is too expensive. R4 a gig?
i'll stick with my R1/Gig OpenWeb Gold thank you very much.

Thanks for the info ! I will get hold of Telkom via Facebook and see how they can help me from upgrading from my current 4Meg uncapped ADSL line which is pathetically slow:confused: to the VDSL 20Mbit line for R540.

You will need a new account to go with it.. you will spend a lot more than R540 in total...

Not necessarily. If he is already on a capped account only the ADSL circuit price increases. The chances of actually getting the line in the first place is however very slim.

Fair enough... but its just something to remember.. especially since this person seems hellbent on mentioning the price at every given opportunity.

Prices are good to know. Just helping out to those that might pose the ? as to what the pricing would be like for a VDSL line. Like Dr JohnZoidberg mentioned earlier that Data will be needed and depending on one's needs then Yes , The price will increase !

Thought I would mention..............visited the Telkom outlet here in East London and the sales person never heard of VDSL and mentioned that they had not been trained on it yet? Clearly that states to me that VDSL in East London is a LLLLOOOOONNNNNGGGG way away:sick:
