Hi all, I have a 384 line with telkom and am with Mweb as ISP running a Mac laptop.
My mail sometimes takes for ages to send ? Speedtest.net says ; ping 99, down .31 , up .11. These are the figures I get anytime of the day or night. Apple told me to change DNS to 208.67.222.222 a few days ago which helped for a week, but now it's back to snail pace. About 60 seconds to send a one line email from Mail. Help please. Thanks, Duncan.
:confused::confused:

Generally its not a good idea to use international DNS servers, since it won't return IP addresses of local mirrors (like with Facebook, Microsoft and a few other big websites mirrored by Akamai).
0.31Mbps down, 0.11 Mbps up is normal for a 384Kbps ADSL line, however the ping is quite poor.

Where in RSA are you connecting from (Town & Suburb)?

Sorry, I also have 208.67.220.220 in the block. Can I put back the original one as well although I have not got a note of it? 10.0.0.2 or something similar

I would recommend that you put in 10.0.0.2 (which is your Router's IP address) as the first DNS server and then use the OpenDNS (208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222) as secondary options.

If you want to do ping tests, go to www.pingtest.net OR simply use the Windows/Linux ping command-line tool to ping sites like www.mybroadband.co.za / www.take2.co.za / games.saix.net / www.aardvark.co.za

Do have you the uncapped ADSL bundle from Mweb, or a capped one?
Just note that your line speed won't mean that you would get that speed from websites. You should notice that you'll get better speeds after office hours/off-peak.

pingtest = A , pocket loss 0 , ping .41ms , jitter 3ms using mweb ? Hope that makes sense.
am on uncapped R219.00/month
changing the DNS , Do I put them all in the left hand box seperated by a ; ?
ie , 10.0.0.2; 208 etc; 208 etc.
or below each other
ie
10...
208...
208...

And forgot.... when sending email from my gmail to my mac mail, the message goes instantly

Wait! Stoppie lorrie!!

Do you have both your mac mail and your gmail set up in Mail? or are you sending from the Gmail web page to your Mac mail? What smtp server are you using? smtp.mwb.co.za? The DNS server has absolutely no affect on how quickly you send mail, it just resolves FQDNs to IP adresses. But a local DNS is a good idea.

Sorry , I'm clueless. Gmail is seperate, ie I open gmail on the desktop to send mail to my iafrica.com address. regarding smtp, where do I find that info? Mac mail in on the desk at the bottom. Thanks, duncan
