I'm so glad for telnet, makes it easier to troubleshoot email issues than trying to battle it out with Outlook/Thunderbird only...

A simple telnet <mail server IP> 25 or telnet <mail server IP> 110 gives you all you need to know if it's working or not...

Nope mail servers don't always respond.

But yeah I use telnet a lot.

telnet <IP address> 25

helo

mail from: [email protected]

rcpt to: [email protected]

data:

blah blabalan

.

To add to this, I love loopbacks or network devices that support spoofing of ip's.
Makes testing a breeze
