I'm so glad for telnet, makes it easier to troubleshoot email issues than trying to battle it out with Outlook/Thunderbird only... :D

A simple telnet <mail server IP> 25 or telnet <mail server IP> 110 gives you all you need to know if it's working or not...
 
Could you potentially ping the ip addy of the mail server and get info that way?
 
To add to this, I love loopbacks or network devices that support spoofing of ip's.
Makes testing a breeze
