Temporary driver's license

I lived abroad for over 3 years and my SA license has expired, will I be able to "walk in" to get temporary license while I wait for my renewal appointment date in 2 months time?

Depends on where you go - some licencing centers allow it, others don't - for example, in Pretoria/Centurion/Midrand area, Centurion and Midrand apparently don't allow it anymore but Waltloo in Pretoria still does.
