Hi Guys,

While sentech sorts out their bandwidth issues, what do you guys think of an idea of a caching server at sentech which can be used at mywireless users free will when they want to ?

All that is needed is a cache server only caching images. Simple. So every person that goes to google gets the cached copy of the google image for example. The problem is with news sites and transponder/calculators that update frequently. These are difficult for the cache to handle due to the dynamic nature. If only the relevant images were reloaded I think browsing would seem way faster.

Another thing, a transparent proxy doesnt necessarily provide caching or am I wrong? The true definition of a transparent proxy is that we are all getting our web requests etc via one single server instead of directly so in effect, we are all subject to the same traffic or packet paths (routes). Caching could be an added feature but I for one, doubt if this is actually the case.

netcache02.infosat.net definitely caches. It has caused many of us to download the old MySignal. Not only does it cache, but it changes some of the headers from "Don't cache" to "Cache"

There is a better solution to caching : Large window compression. At the price we pay for bandwidth, it would be feasible to have a server farm that uses a Gzip type algorithm with a very large window (many GBs) at each end of our connection to the US.

The nice thing about it is that it will work for all protocols, including P2P.

But as we have discussed, cheaper bandwidth may actually hurt Sentech and Telkom.

What about going to some consumer body - I bet you if 50 or so all loge a complaint, Sentech will bow down and issue a few credits to those affected. Gosh, I hate saying this but that may include noone to :-)
