Ten arrested in Parow cop corruption probe

Nine policemen from Parow, in Cape Town, and a former employee of the police station were arrested on corruption charges early on Friday morning, Western Cape police said.
"The officials: one sergeant, eight constables, and one former employee, will be charged with corruption following information that they took bribes from suspects and stole exhibits," said Captain FC van Wyk.
They were arrested by the provincial anti-corruption unit.
Western Cape provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Arno Lamoer welcomed the arrests.
"This will send out a strong message to all police officials that bad elements within the service will not be tolerated," he said in a statement.
"We wish to assure the community of Parow that service delivery will not be compromised by these arrests.
"Contingency measures have been put in place to ensure that all services are rendered at the police station," he said.

PLATO WELCOMES PAROW COP CORRUPTION PROBE
The arrests of nine policemen from Parow, in Cape Town, and a former employee of the police station on corruption charges was welcomed by Western Cape community safety MEC Dan Plato on Friday.
"The arrests... send a strong message to the members of the SA Police Service (SAPS)and our crime-affected communities -- corruption will not be tolerated," he said in a statement.
The 10 were arrested by the provincial anti-corruption unit early Friday morning, Captain FC van Wyk said earlier.
"The officials -- one sergeant, eight constables, and one former employee -- will be charged with corruption following information that they took bribes from suspects and stole exhibits," said Van Wyk.
Plato said a Transparency International research project last year revealed that up to 83 percent of South Africans thought police were corrupt.
"This large crackdown on corrupt cops will hopefully start changing this perception and build public trust in our men and women in blue, as many of them are hardworking, honest, and dedicated to protecting our communities."
He said the provincial police annual report showed that 183 police members were convicted of criminal cases and 44 were found guilty of corruption or related offences in the previous financial year.
Democratic Alliance spokeswoman on community safety in the province Mireille Wenger also welcomed the arrests.
"The DA commends efforts by the SAPS to root out corrupt and criminal officers," she said in a statement.
"These arrests show a strong stance against corruption by SAPS management and send out the message that corruption and fraud within the service will not be tolerated."
Earlier, Western Cape provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Arno Lamoer also welcomed the arrests.

Well to be fair when you arrest 10 police that have access to firearms and other weapons, you take no chances
Dockets will vanish..
Convictions mean nothing without dismissals and chances are that, whatever happens, they will all move to greener pastures at other stations.
The DA has been trying for years to get cops with criminal records dismissed but the labour laws have been written to protect criminals where the ANC deems it to be in their interests.
