Ten people have been arrested for allegedly stealing copper cables, North West police said on Friday.

"Police in Marikana and Aquarius mine security officials apprehended 10 suspects for theft and possession of suspected stolen copper cables on Wednesday," spokesman Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said in a statement.

"The suspects were arrested at a disused Aquarius mine shaft after information was received that there were illegal activities taking place at the shaft."

Mokgwabone said eight of the men were foreign nationals from Mozambique and Zimbabwe, while the other two were South Africans.

Police recovered pots, torches and hacksaws, as well as tinned food, during the arrests.

"According to the information, some of the suspects were also found in possession of dagga," he said.

The recovered cables weighed 5380 kilograms, with an estimated value of R109,000.

The group was expected to appear in the Marikana Periodical Court on Monday to face charges of theft, possession of suspected stolen goods and possession of dagga.

One gets very hungry while hacking through the insulation. I'm assuming the pot is to heat up the beans?

It is good that the copper was recovered and the arrests made but how much is it going to cost to replace those cables or was everything taken from the disused mine?
