Teraco announces big data centre upgrade

Teraco has announced a 30 megawatt (MW) expansion of its CT2 hyperscale data centre facility in Brackenfell, Cape Town.

The company expects to complete the expansion project in early 2025, incorporating the latest environmentally sustainable cooling and water management designs.
 
Speaking to some nothern suburb ISPs, they are keen to use it, but very few of the FNOs are resident there, so it does not make sense to move most of their core network there.
 
So somebody help me here please. If a server or device is rated at 1kW (and the GPGPU racks obviously a lot more, but average assumption) then 30MW means 30 000 devices. If the PEU is very bad at 1.5 that will be 20000 devices. And if router to server ratio is 1:4 (two routers per 8 servers in 42 racks) then there is enough space for 16000 servers. Is my math in the right ballpark?

So is this why the entire section of the Bottelary sideways is being lifted again even though it was constructed hardly a few years ago.

Does nobody forward plan?
 
Hope they have their own Eskom to power it.

Yes and no. Ratings are the maximum but in practice you never achieve the maximum continuously. Also it's based on the maximum rating for each rail which you'll never be using all at once so while a PSU might be rated at 1kW the individual rails for drives might only be able to supply 200W before you need another. So there's probably a lot of headroom built into that 30MW and they can safely oversell by quite a bit.

Sure. But what is your estimate on number of servers?

I also doubt that they size their power on average use, but rather peak use or even use a kW/m^2 sum.

So I am really after a good estimate (range) of how many servers will fit once at nominal capacity.
