Terrible ADSL connection

Hi,

I'm at my wits end with Telkom.

My adsl line was OK when my connection speed was still 1mbps, but started becoming unusable after upgrades to 2mbps.

I tried upgrading to 4 mbps but this was even worse. When doing a speedtest, I get a max download speed of 1.25mbps regardless if i'm on 2mbps or 4mbps line speed.

My line stats are viewable here. I live in observatory (cape town) and connect to the salt river exchange.

Do you think I am too far from the exchange? Do my stats suck? Maybe my exchange is congested. I have logged 2 faults already, the standard port reset doesnt do a thing and the technician doesn't seem interested in actually fixing anything.

Any help appreciated.

Your SNR/noise margins are very good for a 4Mbps ADSL connection when you take in consideration that your line attenuation (largely relative to your distance to the exchange) is that high: 50dB.

Please post a trace route to like www.google.co.za.
If the 2nd hop has a high latency already (like 50ms+), then you're most likely on a congested DSLAM/exchange - like many of us. Did this start to occur during the first week of October by any chance? Because this was around the time Telkom did the upgrades for the 384kbps users to 1Mbps.

I am with Pada on this one. I checked on my connection and the 2nd hop is 20ms My connection was upgraded but I have been fortunate that I have not experienced any issues.

Regards

Tim

Hi,

I have done the tracert... second hop latency is 98ms.

I logged my 4th fault yesterday. I'm sick of paying R600 a month for pathetic connection like this.

Kyuss, please do a traceroute from a device that is connected via a LAN cable!

Currently the very first hop (to your own router) has a high latency of 28ms already, making it almost impossible to judge the following hops.

Usually, even with decent WiFi connectivity, you can get latencies below 2ms to your own router. So if you don't have a device that can be connected via a cable, try and get as good signal as possible and ensure that your first hop has a low latency.

98ms for the second hop is higher than what it should be - so there is a pretty big chance that you're on a congested exchange/DSLAM.

Same problem ever since I switched from 1Mb to 2Mb line.

I think they are not entirely ready for the upgrade, and now we are all getting a 0.5Mb connection instead.
