Good day, I currently have a 2mb line with Telkom, but I get very bad speeds, I checked my downstream noise and line attenuation and this does not look good:

SNR: 5.1

Attenuation:36.9

Is there any way to improve the attenuation or SNR as currently I am syncing at 1024 downstream. I have contacted telkom to upgrade my line and they said a 4mb option is available, but will it be worth it looking at my SNR and Attenuation ?

There is a Telkom green box literally 2 houses from my house and less than 100meters from my house is one of those pinkish coloured Telkom boxes.

Ok, but with my current attentuation and SNR will 4mb be a viable option or will I still sync with such low speeds ?

Barely, SNR below 6 is marginal, 12 is ideal.

If you are more than 3km from the exchange its hopeless. If less than 2km keep pestering Telkom/Openserve to fix your line quality.

Hi DigitalSoldier. Your downstream line attenuation of 36,9 dB means the length of your copper wire to the exchange is 2,7 km. The experts say attenuation is normally directly proportional to the length of your line (13,81 dB per km).

There’s something wrong with your downstream SNR of 5,1 dB. It should be at least 6 dB.

This article says: “On a good line, BT (British Telecom) generally considers that a 6 dB SNR margin is appropriate to maintain a connection without a significant number of drops or errors.”

That is the problem right there. Reported a fault on 20/12/2017, nothing done yet.
