So today my gf got a notice that she will be retrenched. However she was told she could avoid retrenchment (and all the others that got notice) if they submit a proposal in writing why someone else not flagged for retrenchment should be flagged instead of the people who got the notices. If its good enough she would keep her job and the other person would be replaced.

Thats not ethical at all! Im not sure if its even legal!

Tell her to write the letter and say that she thinks the person who composed that letter should replace her :) Then wait for them to retrench her and get the package.

Wow, not good at all! You should tell them that whoever thought of that should be retrenched, as well as all the people who agreed to it!

As someone said though, she should leave that company.

The worst was, she was just promoted within the company into a design position. The upside is she was called aside later today and told her job is now safe. When the lists had been done the person who promoted her was not in the country, so apparently she should keep her job. She will know on Friday.

Its a nice paying job and she is searching around though. Right now we cant afford either of us to be out of a job so this has not been the greatest day.

Wiz your g/f wouldn't happen to be the linux penguin hey? :p

It's a dog eat dog world out there wizard, if she thinks she does a better job than someone else now is the time to speak up.

The letter i think is aimed to retrench the correct people, she could be flagged but someone could be way worse and not flagged. Now this gives her the chance to say something. As to whether this is correct practice or illegal is debatable.

Doing something like that is highly unethical, and if my guess is correct highly illegal as well.

But since your gf's job is apparently safe now, she shouldn't really pursue the issue at least until she's got a new job at another company

If push comes to shove we can "rought it" through one of us losing a job, but it would mean most of our luxuries would go :( Anyways, Im optimistic for Friday.

This is what happens when the rich get scared of losing their excessive luxuries.
Damn Wiz, wish you 2 the best!

How can you say that stoke, do you know how many people are struggling world wide, cutting down on staff does not mean the rich are scared, it more than likely means the company in a bit of trouble.

Yea, soz. I am just bitter killa. I have watched 3 companies "downsize" and "retrench" while the top level management still get their bonuses and keep paying 40 k a month on their houses and 20 k a month on their cars. Enough money to hire 6 good people.

Sounds like stuff is looking better for you guys.

I can't get my head around this process though ... Staff must submit a proposal as to why others should be retrenched and not them? Is that serious? Wouldn't it be a huge conflict of interest not to mention huge waste of time and energy. It sounds extremely bazaar.
