The trusty old Canon i850 decided to go on the blink ( seven blinks )

Turns out it needs a new PRINT-HEAD.

Stock is availble -- but at R760.00 -- at which price one might as well go and buy a new printer.

This is really terrible -- throw out an otherwise perfectly working printer just because of a bit of plastic with some fancy nozzles and some electronic contacts.

Well anyway what can one do -- so I go out and get a new Canon iP4700 ( new smart kid on the block )

Get it home set it all up put it on the Win2K machine-- set it up to be shared on the home network -- everything is looking good........

--WTF -- NO drivers for Win 98SE :(

( You install additional OS drivers on the host machine that is sharing the printer )

OK you say -- bloody silly luddite -- well ..... some of us hate throwing away old stuff that is working fine -- especially if you can put it on the network and make use of it.

So -- to cut a long painful story short.

Is there anyone here that fixes printers that might have a scrapped i850 that still has a working print-head for cash ?????? ( even if it is old )

or

Can anyone tell me if there is an equivalent printer for the iP4700 that had Win 98 SE drivers , drivers that WILL work with the iP4700 under Win 98SE
-- google is not taking me anywhere.

( Had a bunch of stuff installed under -- /spool/Drivers/w32x86 -- dll's etc Goes through the instal process -- but end up with an error message.

So much for "plug&play"

There is the fancy printer all dressed up and nowhere to go.

Much appreciate any assistance.

You can try Partserv for a print head, but they can be a bit difficult selling to the public
Tel:( 031) 579 5853 / 5824

PartServe -- Nope

Thanks for the tip.

I am already with Partserv -- that is who I got the price from.

Incidentally -- I also contacted the guys that Partserv themselves get their stock from. ( British / European based company )

That is why I am looking for a used part from a scrapped printer.

I CANNOT pay R760.00 for some piece of plastic -- R250.00 is more my style :D

Unfortunately printer manufacturers stick all the brains of their cheap printers into the drivers, that is why you are battling to get 98SE(obsolete!) operating with your printer.

This is why I prefer ethernet network printers and also check for linux support.
You can get a complete Lexmark e120n for not much more than that Crapanon's spare part.
