Terrible Software update support from Huawei ZA

My wife has the P8 lite from last year. About every 2/3 months an update gets pushed to the phone.

Hi, we are glad to assist you. If there is an available update for the phone, you will receive a notification for it and you can check the previous steps provided to X-Gamer and Scary_Turtle for more help.

Terrible Software Update Support

My P8 is still on 2015. I am actually concerned about security. Might get a different brand after soon.

Hi, we are happy to assist you. Please send us a screenshot from the latest version of the phone by going to settings < about phone. You can check the following link: http://bit.ly/2xFOa69 for more help. Regarding your concern about the security, please clarify if you are facing any issue in the phone and what do you mean by security?

Good to see some formal response (even if it looks like a bot) but is doesn't change the fact there is nowhere near the level of update support offered that is expected. If I buy a premium priced device I expect to get timious security updates with it. My Mate 9 is currently on security patch date 5 April and that is with using Firmware Finder. Simply not good enough, whomever is holding up the process.
This will certainly factor in my next purchase.

Just followed the official procedure to bypass the network etc.

So according to the CS rep the latest security patch for a Mate 9 (their current flagship device) is 5 April 2017. Very nearly 6 MONTHS old.

Pathetic and inexcusable.

None of the Official software update procedures work (OTA nor HiSuite). I've used the DLOAD method to go from B170 to B180 (September 2016 to July 2017 patch level).

It seems like your carrier's (MTN etc) are giving Huawei a bad name. Firmware Finder shows me that B381 (Android Nougat) is available for MTN South Africa, but it's not authorised yet. Strangely enough, all software updates for the MTN variant were made available in July 2017 and nothing before...

Can you de-brand my device so I can finally receive software updates?

Ja carriers are giving Huawei a bad name.My P8 lite I got from MTN was locked on second sim.Could only use 1 sim and sd card. Not 2 sim cards.

Phoned them and the damduiker agent replies with:" We only stock the single sim variant".The more I tell him the phone has dual sim capabilties the more he argues.

The damduiker agent then tells me MTN doesn't sell their phones as dual sim variants.I then tell him that my one friend has a P8 Lite and he can use 2 sims.

The damduiker's reply: "He must have a special P8 Lite phone."

So in short,I debranded my phone and installed European firmware and couldn't be happier.

To MTN and other carriers doing this: You should rot in jail for what you are doing to the customer.

We are paying for a service that you are not providing and it should actually also be illegal to brand a phone with software to a specific
carrier.

Agreed. I totally detest when they flash their own custom ROM to the phones, and limit some functionality.

So far the only carriers that doesn't do custom ROM flashing is CellC and Telkom Mobile.

So I also saw that their ROMS are "open".They at least are giving the customer what they are paying for.
And I will say it straight: MTN and Vodacom are the guilty parties. They are supposed to be the leading cellular network providers but instead they rob you of functionality.

It's like getting a bowl of soup and you are handed a fork to finish it with.

How?

From P9 Lite thread, looks like some new updates were released. A new B382 build for the MTN EVAL09C16 shows up with a date of 2017.11.11.

But Firmware finder says "Not approved for installation"...

Same issue on the Mate 9. Firmware Finder offering B185 on 31/10 but that is the same version that came out in April. Phone also says "Not approved"

If you look at that same thread you would see that the unapproved software works fine without any problems.

Not in this case, the phone will download it but refuses to install

How did you debrand?

Not for the P9. The Nougat firmware package structure means when you flash with dload, it does not install the bluetooth, camera and other system apps.

I used that method to install B180 when I was stuck on B170. The main firmware package contains almost all the system apps except the theme engine, so I have some I'm left with some ugly icons and UI elements. The secondary zip file which cannot be flashed contains all the region specific bloatware (fb, twitter, deezer, booking.com, news24 etc.). Small price to pay for no bloatware :)

You must use the proxy download method, then everything installs as it should.

Hope the updates are better on the Mate 10 pro!!

Got the Nougat update! B382 came through on Thursday morning. Lost some data, but hey, finally!

Quite a refreshing change, I must say.
