there's only one grid and city power are still eskom customers.Okay City Power customers ;-)
A report by Australian consulting firm Aurecon analyzed the impact of the Tesla big battery at Hornsdale Power Reserve in its role in the Frequency Control and Ancillary Services (FCAS) markets. These are basically events that require quick reactions when there are sudden changes in demand or supply.
Tesla battery has demonstrated how lithium-ion battery power reserves can play a big role in the security of the overall grid. While fuel fossil-powered generators will take several minutes to feed power to the grid in need, the HPR’s fast-discharge capability beat these options and give consumers access to more affordable energy.
Of course, there are some on this forum that refuse to acknowledge that when power generators fail unexpectedly, that the effect on the gird is to see voltage fluctuations (drops) and a drop in frequency as well, which are then followed by an overshoot as extra diesel generators are brought online which then momentarily pushes voltages high and frequency overshoots as well.
These are the key paragraphs to read and understand:
It is about helping to maintain grid stability ( voltage and frequency) NOT to play a huge role in the mitigation of a scarcity of "Base Load" [Never understood why the word "Load" is used to describe a shortage of base generating capacity].

Certainly, wind farms and solar farms coupled with battery storage is a better source of FCAS power than standby diesel generation and even pumped storage. All these solutions when done on a small scale, cannot really address a shortage of "Base Load"
