I am posting here but my response is mostly @
this article:
At over 500k a pop, I think they should re-think the interior... (
http://www.motoring.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=1828&fPicId=121192) lose the leather stitched dash and elaborate LCD center console and they can probably lop 50k - 75k off the price.
And given the coming cost increases (and scarcity) of electricity in this country, one really needs to think hard about its viability. Top Gear tested the Tesla roadster, and frankly, they were very unimpressed by the battery performance of both test cars at their disposal. Their verdict was simply
nice idea, but not a genuine viable option. Tesla hasn't delivered an awful lot of roadsters (I seem to recall something about 200 or 250 only?) so as a production car company, I don't think their reliability has exactly been proven yet...
I think it will take some time (probably 10 or so years) before this car genuinenly becomes mainstream. Apart from the initial celebrity rush to buy them, I don't see them rolling off the showroom floors at any great pace. The price far outweighs the pros... at over R150k more than my Audi (yes I know it's a bad comparison - I should probably compare it with something from the Jag stable (XF country), but hey, if I could buy an XF or even an XK, I'd disregard the Tesla anything anyway...), it will just never be cost effective @ that price. R150k can buy a LOT of fuel... and the maintenance argument is also pretty much nullified as I have an extended motorplan.
That said, she is a looker - taking design cues from Jag and Aston (sooo obvious innit?) is not a bad thing, and I would certainly not mind one @ 175k less (and a guarantee of at least 250km per charge, and a maintenance plan and not on some stupid lease system... actually, nah, probably not worth the effort. I'll take one for R100.)...
