Tesla Powerwall 2 has been announced.

14KWhr @ $5500 or $392/KW

Assuming 14KWh x 365 x 10 = 51100KW over lifetime (although batteries should last longer), we're looking at a price of $5500 / 51100KW = $0.10c /KWhr or R1.56 a KWhr used @ R14.5 per $1.

Given that municipal pricing is already higher than this, its a game changer for those in the cities, assuming it lands here without serious markups.

Tesla indicates that their inverter will cost another $1000 in a typical install, so this is looking rather cost effective.

14KWhr should be sufficient for overnight use for most houses in .za enabling more people to go offgrid, or at least moderate their usage.

Specs:
Mounting: Wall or Floor Mounted, Indoor/Outdoor
Inverter: Fully integrated Tesla inverter
Energy: 14 kWh
Power: 5 kW continuous, 7 kW peak
Round Trip Efficiency: 89% for AC Powerwall, 91.8% for DC Powerwall
Operating Temperature Range: –20°C to 50°C (–4°F to 122°F)
Warranty: Unlimited cycles for up to 10 years
Dimensions: 1150 mm x 755 mm x 155 mm (45.3 in x 29.7 in x 6.1 in)
Weight: 122 kg (269 lbs)

It won't make sense for everyone, but at their posted prices, it makes self generation + storage a whole lot more feasible.
I foresee more people leaving the unreliable grid over the next year or three..

Unfortunately this has always been the case.

Except your usage factor is likely to be 40%, if you're lucky, given that you have to size the system for the winter peak, and build it in 14kWh blocks... So, greater than R3.90/kWh, excluding the cost of generating the power.

Face it, grid tied is dead. TOU billing or access charges on residential tariffs will see to that. We're not paying to build real power stations for you to use for backup. And if you think you're gonna get a refit tariff 10 times what council is paying Eskom, then you've got rocks in your head.
