Hi Everyone,

I would like to find out what is the best way to test the call quality of a VOIP Provider.

Currently using Asterisk PBX

the quality of the calls starts with you:
- do you have the correct codec installed
- are you transcoding on the box or is it the same codec end2end
- are you connecting to the SP via www or ipc - if via www your ping to SP should be 30~35ms max
- do you have dedicated line for voice or are you sharing voice and data on same line - if sharing you need QoS - DDWRT works great

The universal open source tool for voice monitoring is 'WireShark' this will give you the ability to see packet loss, jitter ect.
For a simple test just go to www.pingtest.net but remember you are also testing the quality of your internet conection so its not really a real test for the quality of provider.

There are more user friendly tools like voipmonitor that will take that sniffed traffic and present it in a nice GUI report.

My experience is that most of the better players in the VoIP space already monitor their call quality and resolve it way before the customer needs to call. You should also be able to give your provider the call details and they can look up the reported quality of the call.
