Tester looking for Career change

This is at the end of the day up to you

You will have to decide where do I see myself in 10 years and go flat out for it

After all its your life
 
Is there a career counsellor or HR type person you'd feel comfortable talking to at work?

Get the company to send you on a course in something new if you can. Or save up then pay for it yourself. Move sooner rather than later to avoid stagnation.

It sounds like you just sort of took the first job you could, and are now just as willing to choose the first available career.

Choose your career wisely, think about what you want to do, put a plan of action together and follow it (as in gain education in that area, work experience etc.)
 
Tester is the bottom rung of a ladder, you have done the hard yards, why not continue and progress to more of an test analyst role?
 
But good testers become good developers...if you in the job market, it would be difficult to find a role as a developer because companies and agencies only look at you tester experience, and to me, it seems as if you only get noticed by your experience and not your qualification, your qualification is just an interview.

What i would suggest you do...is...talk to your dev team and tell them that you want to try dev and that they should give you. Talk to whoever you can at your current company that is in a senior position. If you can show them that you can dev, then you might be moved up to dev if the position is available.

I was a tester and automation engineer, and man...thats a **** job...anyway...applying for dev roles outside your company can be difficult, because like i said, companies and especially agencies only look at your previous experience.
 
Come to the UK. Contract testers, provided you have something like ISEB and above you will get £250-£350 per day. At an ave of £300 per day that is £6.5k per month. Not half bad I say :D
