How can I test if I have access to the 8ta network(not roaming on EmtyN). I would like to use the 10GB deal, but not sure if it will work for me. On the coverage map I am on the edge, actually about 100m from the edge.
Any ideas how I can improve reception, maybe using an arial or anything that can boost the signal. I am almost sure that this will be cheaper than Telkom's ADSL

Get an 8ta SIM, and have it converted to non-roaming, or maybe "8ta" here on the forum can arrange it for you.

Get a prepaid sim go to a Telkom store and register yourself for the 2gb + 1gb promo deal. Spend r149 to get this prepaid deal go back home and test if it works if not then R149 goes down the drain.

That was exactly what I want to avoid. It's not that much but the principle, and doing it with your kid's knowledge is just setting a bad example. But maybe that's what I have to do.

basically all I need a SIM that only works on the 8ta network, no roaming. Do 8ta have this?

No you don't need to go this route and waste money. Just buy an 8ta SIM, and ask the Telkom shop to make it 'promo data only' access. Promo-data SIMs still allow you to use non-promo data, so just buy a small 8ta voucher and load this, then try.

Another method: the Telkom shops also insist that you have the direct coverage you need (in order to use the promo deals) if you put the SIM in your cellphone and when you boot, it does NOT show MTN Roaming, in other words you are getting your signal directly from an 8ta tower.

If you are in a buffer zone, as you suggest, and you are serious about wanting cheap data, you might consider spending a thousand bucks or so on a Poynting dedicated data antenna, which just might make the difference. Works for me, out in the bush!

Thanks for the info. I think I have an 8ta sim will put it in my phone and check or take it to Telkom shop and ask for the change on it.
I am serious about cheap mobile data and 8ta currently gives me the best option with the 10Gb deal.

Any info about the Poynting dedicated data antenna, installation, price and supplier?
I will probably also need a wifi modem to connect it to the antenna so that multiple devices can use the connection wirelessly.

For wi-fi, get a Huawei B683 - works very well on it's own, and has connector for an external antenna.

I have one from EmptyN. There is a little hole on the side, so I assume that is for the aerial connection.
I think I will try without aerial first and just get the 3G wifi router.
I now have to decide on a dual (ADSL and 3G) or just a 3G router.
