Since getting a DSL line installed in our area before 2010 seems close to impossible I am forced to seek alternative options. Like wireless connections. Specifically from Global Web Intact. Now one of the guys from my work is using them atm so I wanted to go round to his place today to check out the connection.

How can I, short of installing BF2 on his PC, check to see if I would actually be able to play? Can I ping the SGS servers or something like that? If so, how do I do that exactly?

wisps and online gaming like bf2 don't work - due 2 the MB it chows per hour - and your link needs to be 100% stable and not congested .

imho - 2 many things against you - rather create a point to point link towards a place that can get ADSL.

I use GWI and play on local FEAR COMBAT server. Need to speak to their support and prioritise your game traffic for or you will be on a slow backbone and very high ping (even for local games)

Besides installing the game, there is nothing out there that will test and return the correct results, cos only the game itself will "test" the right ports with the right amount of throughput.

Initially, if the tracert from the pc to the tower is > 10 ms then you may as well give up.

But .. you can also ask them to re-prioritise your traffic, and this must be taken into account.
I have found that stable long-distance Wi-Fi connections can be used without a problem for playing battlefield.

But, if battlefield is too much, try installing BZFlag, SGS do run a BZFlag server, and that is a 5 mb install.
