Testing the ADSL quality in an area

Hi all,

I am moving at the end of the month and am trying to do whatever homework is possible to ensure there is good quality ADSL available where im moving to. Where I currently live, the closest telkom exchange is +6km away which means I often get disconnects and the quality of the line just doesn't seem to be great.

I have done an exchange search on http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/ and it appears that the closest exchange to the new place is about 2km. So that seems promising. Does anyone know how accurate that website is?

Is there anything else I can do? I was considering phoning telkom to ask where the closest exchange was by giving them the address/area. But im doubtful as to whether they'll even know what im talking about. Worth a try?

Also, this is clearly a noob question, but could I actually drive to where the exchange appears on http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/ to see if the location is correct as per the website. Or will I not be able to see anything.

I work from home. So having a good quality line is very important. It's one of the main reasons we're moving. The person who lived there previously said he was happy with the adsl line, but I dont think he worked from home so wouldn't have been using the line as much as what I will.

Hi There,
Broadband stats can be a great help. To know where you are connected though you do need to have a telephone number to establish the exact exchange. I live in Ferndale and that site says my exchange is in Craighall North. I am going past whee the map says it is later this week so I am going to see if it is in fact where they say it is.
What is really interesting though is that that is about 10km from where I live and I have no line degradation issues.

The owner moved out about 2 months ago. So I presume he had his phone cancelled. Do you or anyone know if I would be able to do a search on broadband stats based on whatever his old number use to be? Im seeing him tonight so might be able to find out what his old number use to be.

When I move in and get Telkom to get my phone and adsl setup, will I be assigned the same number as what was previously used at that property?

You will probably get a new number it will not be the same number as previous owner.

You can request Telkom to do a trace route to see if you truly are going to be connected to that exchange . But I think they will need a telephone number in order to do so.
