Is this a hoax I was sent this this morning & I have just collected a new card in December which I had a proof of residence with me but was not asked for it?

To comply with the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, we're required to re-verify our customers. Please provide us with your ID & proof of residence (not older than 3 months) by 10 March 2014. Kindly submit at your nearest FNB Branch, e-mail to [email protected] or Fax to 0115430145 to avoid your account being frozen. FNB a div of FRB Ltd.

Only way to make sure is to go to your local branch, or call FNB. I would be suspicious.

It's a normal request from them. Suggest you go to a branch.

It's real, what would be the point of this being a hoax?

Getting your ID and proof of residence should allow any scammer to easily answer any security questions that may be asked about you.

So the branch employees or someone with access to the FICAdocs accounts mailbox on their domain are in on this phishing scam? The fax number on would have to confirm on their website or via phone call obviously as to verify legitimacy, if you want to fax that is.

Anyone receive these kind of sms's from fnb?

FNB :) Reply Y if the below transactions are yours or N if not. 2014-02-04 R213.33 at A Computer Programming Service Company 2014-02-04 R3638.76 at A Computer Programming Service Company R at

Look at the smiley, its : ) where the usual payment notifications and other sms use : - ). Furthermore, these sms come form 081 numbers, and not 082.

Does sound suspicious, as they don't give a telephone number, just 3 methods of submitting.
Most people don't want to go into the branch, so will email or fax.
Also, if you've had the account a while, why will they ask you to FICA again?

As far as I know, FICA documents must be submitted in person with your ID.
Seeing as you cannot trust anyone anymore, I would first call fnb's call center to confirm, and then go to the branch.

Yes, when I just got my card they sent an SMS like that once or twice and they also called me with the same question (automated call, not a consultant).

"Please note that we have received feedback from our Messaging IT department with regards to the investigation. It seems the numbers from where the messages are generating do not belong to FNB so these are probably phishing attempts, even though the transaction was legit.

Please do not divulge any personal information in these messages in future, and let us know should you receive more of them from a similar number.
