Well I think I owe DSTV a big thank you for increasing their prices on their Premium bundle.
I have been a DSTV customer for over 5 years and even though all being said here in various posts, I was rather happy with them, as it was a good choice to watch TV and was easy to use (my wife is a non tech person )

So even though everyone was looking for alternatives I was rather consent and could not be bothered to invest any time into switching to a alternative.

That was up until the last increase of pricing where we hit almost 700R for the bouquet.

So after a weekend of research I decided that now is the time.

So I went for a streaming solution Unotelly/WD Live SMP/Plex Media Server/Netflix and a 10 Mb internet with Afrihost.

Being DSTV free for a month now and boy am I loving it.

I went for WD due to the fact that it was available off the shelf here in SA so in case of warrenty issues I would not need to send it around the world and for the DLNA functionality which allows me to stream my HD movies off my PC.

The plex server offers different channels that I can add so that I can stream from sites like let me watch this easily (I am not so much concerned about watching my series in HD).

Setup went smoothly and keeps me busy to play around with all sorts of setting which I love to do. I installed a couple of themes on the WD and Plex is an awsome tool with loads of addons out there.

So again thank you DSTV for encouraging me to make this move.

I have a couple of things I still need to figure out so maybe someone can give their input on it....

- Is there a good music media server that allows to download cover pics and works with WD? one of the few weaknesses of Plex in my opinion.

- Any news on Sports streaming? I am a big F1 fan and have been watching the races on my PC via iplayer, is there any way to get that onto TV for live broadcast?

So that's my story up to now.

What is your monthly bandwidth cost versus the price of the premium bouquet?

10 Mb including line rental is 899R.

I do not really take this into account as I had the internet line before and I think it is not really possible to just add the internet line as a whole into the expenses as I use it for other things too.

I'm not a fan of dstv either. I researched the numbers to go streaming. And dstv came out cheaper.
The biggest downside for streaming is dealing with adsl connectivity and the technicalities for a non technical person.

I downgraded my dstv to compact. I'm a lifelong F1 fan and decided that I will give up watching F1 for now, it will survive without me.

Was thinking of getting some support from other fellow F1 fans that are not dstv fans to email the powers that be at F1 and informing them that due to dstv only showing F1 on the premium bouquet, they are losing viewers. Bernie might not be too happy with that and maybe we can view it on SABC or E-tv instead.

You can still stream it you know. From dstv's website.

And Bernie doesn't give a toss as long as monochoice pays him the fee for the rights.

The almost R700 pm also got to me. I had MWeb and then DSTv for years, but can't justify R700+ pm. Cancelled and now I am DSTv free for a month. Getting the content via streaming on a 6Mb line and it works good.

They will continue to increase and increase and people will complain and complain but still they will subscribe month after month.

DSTV cancelled Dec 2012.
Roku's, 6mbps ADSL, uncapped OpenWeb Gold, Netflix and Hulu = sorted!
Don't miss DSTV one little bit.

BTW: All ADSL components were already in place so the change amounted to a major cost saving with DSTV gone.

There will always be subscribers who are prepared pay for the premium bouquet, but, like me, there are those who realise that there is a limit to what they are prepared to pay.

I agree, my DSTV is also gone, I have a Walka 7 for sport.

Makes sense.

How's the nontechnical wife dealing with the new setup?

Well the set up is easy enough for her to handle and the only thing she hates more than using tech she doesn't understand, is to pay too much for a service that can be done cheaper.

So all is well and we are not missing the DSTV rip off ...

Just my thought. The 8400R that I save per year will be going towards a 55" 3d TV. :D

Where? I couldn't find it, is it possible without subscribing to stream from them?

I asume I am having a blond moment

You need an active account registered on their website but it doesn't need to be a premium one.

I've also been DTSV free for close to a month now.

4mb line, WDTV Live, Raspberry Pi with XBMC, Sickbeard, SABNZBD, Couchpotato and Usenet supply all my needs including SS streaming.

Currently streaming the penultimate stage from the Giro on Eurosport.
