The 64kbps Question

has anybody noticed a definate speed drop in the Randburg this morning? the telkom HTTP speed test is as follows "Your line speed is approximately 111.5 Kbps or 13.7 kBytes/sec" thats a shocker, i hope this is not the cap!!!!!!! Im trying to do my stupid TCP vs UDP assignment and sites just wont connect...lol

the only thing iBurst needs to do to get the ADSL'ers to switch over to iBurst is either to remove cap or not to cap local traffic :D

And reduce the modem cost and improve latency as much as is possible with wireless. The modem costs should come down in price as more people take up the service - it all depends how much.

If WBS does have a guaranteed 64kbps after being capped and the service stabalises, many ADSL people will seriously consider moving over.

Lets face it, it's all very well have unlimited local access when your capped - if you were in the USA for instance :D
But we're not and there really isn't that much to do on the local scene - outdated downloads, a pathetic online gaming scene (in comparison to overseas) and forums.

I would take 64kbps all round rather than have no international access.
Of course, it all comes down to stability - early adopters are always the guinea pigs - lets see what happens 6 months down the line, one can only hope it will be good !

Gents, if you get capped, I rate you will know about it.
But if the 64Kb service is decent, who needs to buy extra bandwidth?

BTW this is off the beaten track, but does anyone find this funny. First the launch is on April fools day, then the olivedale tower is supposed to be rolled out today on a public holiday? What next.

Well... if your connection maxes out at 8 kbyte/sec then I'm cool with that.
But if I am better off pulling out the old 56K modem and powering that up cause it's faster.... I will beat them to death!!!

we havent even had a cap yet, so how about we see how that goes first

I see the usage on the Kempton Tower dropping to .01% by the second day :)

Now there's an idea...

How about on the iBurst.co.za Network Status page, WBS put the Utilization% (how full to capacity) each base-station is? - there's probably enough additional info available that WBS could allow you click on each base-station [i.e. base-station name links to a more info url for that base-station] to get all the additional info...?

Excellent idea--Come on WBS , read this and do it !

I spoke to a reseller yesterday and he assured me the 64K capped rate will be real 64K with a contention ratio of either 40 or 50 to 1. I'll believe it when I see it. I don't think anybody at this stage knows for sure what its going to be like (probably not even WBS-M).

why do we talk about 64k likes its a good thing? it lets me get an extra 1byte a second than i could with a normal 56 modem, yay

Well I tend to look at it from someone who is about to ditch MyDraadLoos ;

So i am promised these wonderful download speeds up to 3GB and after that i STILL get what I'm already used to with suckTech.

You have to admit, it really sounds like a good deal.

not for me, I was never on sentech and just spent 4 months downloading 8GB a day

Well 3GB is definitely too little. 10 - 15GB would be more realistic. But once you are capped still being able to surf, email, IM, etc, will definitely be a plus, although I'm not too hopeful WBS will actually do it.
