Alfa Romeo Giulia gets new options and price drop (UK)

New alloys and smartphone mirroring added to the Giulia options list, while mid-range Tecnica models get a £1000 price drop

The Alfa Romeo Giulia's options list has been expanded and a £1000 price drop applied to mid-range Tecnica models to coincide with the 67 numberplate change.

This comes less than a year after the first examples of the BMW 3 Series-rivalling executive saloon were delivered to customers.

The options, which are available as of now, include 18in five-spoke diamond-cut alloys on all trims except for the entry-level Giulia and 19ins exclusive to the hot Veloce.

In addition, twin tail-pipes (£150) are now available on the petrol Super model and the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions are available with all specifications for £250.

The significant price drop applied Tecnica trim, which is available with only a 2.2-litre diesel engine, has brought P11D values down to £30,840 and £32,040 respectively for the 150hp and 180hp variants.

Tecnica is aimed at company car drivers, with standard kit including electric seats, a climate pack, privacy glass and a driver assistance pack that includes all-round parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

Alfa Romeo claims that the Tecnica now "offers the lowest whole life cost in its class, benefitting from a low P11D value, high residual values, low maintenance costs and excellent fuel efficiency".

The Giulia (not including the Quadrifoglio) has also been added to Alfa Romeo's Test Me Contribution scheme, joining the 4C, Giulietta and Mito, in which private buyers will be offered a £2000 discount if they take a test drive and place an order by 30 September.

BMW M boss says Alfa Giulia QV is M3’s ‘closest’ rival

The head of the BMW M division has good things to say about the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde.

Mention the BMW M3 and the first natural rival – historically, anyway – to spring to mind might be the Mercedes-AMG C63. But the head of the high-performance M division believes that another competitor is far closer to the M3 in terms of vehicle dynamics.

Yes, BMW M boss Frank Van Meel suggested to CarAdvice that the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde is the German performance compact executive sedan’s “closest” rival dynamically.

“Alfa Romeo with the new Giulia, they more or less followed the M3 completely as a concept, so for us it was really interesting to see how far they came. And I must say for me they made a really nice car,” Van Meel said.

“We say that we are the best; I have to say that and I am also convinced about that. The closest one regarding vehicle dynamics in that segment really is the Alfa – I think they did a very good job,” he added.

The M chief went on to identify a couple of other brands on which he was keeping a close eye.

“Of course, we look a lot at Porsche because with the X5 M the main competitor is the Cayenne, and we also look at Jaguar because they are also moving up and going strong into performance,” Van Meel told the Australian publication.

We Could See The Alfa Romeo Giulia Coupe Late Next Year

According to a recent report by Automotive News, the two-door version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia aka the Coupe could show it’s face before the end of 2018.

The long-awaited and highly-anticipated two-door Giulia will arrive before the end of next year and directly target the BMW 4-Series, Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe.

We all thought we would see it at this year’s Geneva Motor Show but that obviously did not happen. Maybe they want to create some more hype?

It would make sense for Alfa to create the Coupe version for two reasons. The first reason is that it will be relatively cheap to develop and the second and more important reason is that it may encourage prospective Mercedes, BMW and Audi buyers to see what the Italian’s can do.

When the Giulia Coupe does come to fruition, we are pretty certain it will be offered with the same range of engines which means there will be a range-topping 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 Quadrifoglio version.

The SAGMJ revealed the 2018 WesBank South African Car Of The Year competition finalists at the Bryanston Country Club on Tuesday (September 19).
