Laugh all you like at the near-weekly special editions, A110 sales are up

Precisely 4,328 examples of the Alpine A110 were sold worldwide in 2023, representing a 22 per cent jump over the 3,546 cars the French brand managed to shift in 2022.

That suggests that however much we think the horde of special editions is getting a bit boring, the strategy is at least keeping the bean counters at Renault Group happy.

Remember, last year alone we were, um, treated to the A110 R, the A110 San Remo 73 and the A110S Enstone Edition, while plans were announced for an A110 R Le Mans as well.

That last one costs a decidedly un-lightweight £122k, more than double the price of the most basic - and in TG’s opinion, most enjoyable - version of the two-seater sportscar. The game’s gone.

Arctic circle testing for long-awaited electric pocket rocket

Good news about the Alpine A290: the long-awaited electric hot hatch will be unveiled in June 2024.

So tasty there’s a high chance it'll earn its own Michelin star when it launches, we now know the five-seater will actually have, er, five seats. The A290-beta concept had a centrally placed driving position and steering wheel which, sadly, hasn't made it to production.

The steering wheel has borrowed some functionality from F1, though, with Overtake, Recharge and Drive modes all available at the touch of a (steering wheel) button. It'll also have 19in rims clad in Michelin-developed tyres, optimised for EV performance.

We don't yet have more specifics on Alpine's sportier version of the new Renault 5, but the prototype was almost four metres long, just over 1.8m wide and 1.5m tall.

Alpine took its A290 to the Swedish Lapland to fine-tune the hot hatch in winter conditions. Alpine wants to confirm its direction with the A290's handling and agility and make the EV effective in all weather conditions.

The car is adorned in Alpine's original camouflage, has the classic 'A-Arow' logo on the roof, and Alpine's Blue color scheme. The prototype is 3,990mm long, 1,820mm wide, 1,520mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,530mm.

The A290 has an exclusive Alpinesport steering wheel covered in Nappa leather, with a flattened top and bottom, and the three-function selector from Alpine's Formula 1 steering wheel - with OV (Overtake), RCH (Recharge), and Drive modes.

Another exclusive for the A290 are the tires. Michelin provided three special tires for the car, all featuring a special coding system for each Alpine model, in this case, "A29".

The tires are the MICHELIN Pilot Alpin 5 winter tire, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV for optimized energy efficiency, and the MICHELIN Pilot Sport S5 for the highest performance.
