Our Banana Republic
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
Published: November 6, 2010

In my reporting, I regularly travel to banana republics notorious for their inequality. In some of these plutocracies, the richest 1 percent of the population gobbles up 20 percent of the national pie.

But guess what? You no longer need to travel to distant and dangerous countries to observe such rapacious inequality. We now have it right here at home — and in the aftermath of Tuesday’s election, it may get worse.

The richest 1 percent of Americans now take home almost 24 percent of income, up from almost 9 percent in 1976. As Timothy Noah of Slate noted in an excellent series on inequality, the United States now arguably has a more unequal distribution of wealth than traditional banana republics like Nicaragua, Venezuela and Guyana.

That really says it all. Democratic/Labour/Liberal Democratic, etc. parties, mostly centrist and marginally left of centre, exist for a reason. Without them you and I, "the (wo)man in the street", would be right (No pun intended!) royally shafted by the ruling elites and power brokers.

We've been fighting for our rights since Magna Carta. Only in the 20th Century have the common people, and only in some countries, achieved anything like a fair deal for themselves. Wealth, power, property and privilege are held out to us as the goals to aim for. We are blamed for our "failure to achieve" at every turn, and yet most of us are in the same position as colonial peoples armed with spears up against mechanised infantry in terms of our economic and political influence.

The saving grace is that even the parties of privilege and power rely on the votes of ordinary people to gain and hold office. That is democracy in practice. Without it we would be screwed, just as our forefathers were until the ruling classes literally 'fell on their swords' in the great European holocaust that was World War I.
