... is a pretty good liberation movement within the context of the European exploiting Africa to the extent to which they (the Europeans) were allowed.

The ANC is though at the end of its life WRT a political life WRT to the assumption that because you are black you should be (and can be) oblivious to all REAL politics and thusly benefit from anything racially segregated.

Actually they are useless if they don't have a majority vote.

The truth influences everyone always.

ANC doesn't win on policy, it wins on history. Apartheid was hell for some people. ANC will forever be remembered as the heroes of the struggle. Not voting for the ANC will be like betraying the people who gave you your freedom. That, unfortunately is the mentality of many. This is not news.

The only possible way I can foresee real political action is if the majority of the population start getting a real education, not a poor state school education where the history class serves as ANC propaganda (Think China, educated people, still highly communist.) Until then the majority of the population are basically very simple minded, without trying to seem like an ***hole, thats the way I feel. Even if Malema/Zuma for example would debate with DA politicians, it will never hurt their support base.

One, the majority of their support base won't understand the argument or rather the implications of the argument. Two, Malema tactics is just to turn around and brand everyone white imperiliast agents etc. He doesn't have an intellectual to stand on, but unfortunately for us, he simply doesn't need one.

Unfortunately due to the amount of power the ANC has and how loose it is with our money, highly educated people (Particularly black people) can become rich by getting in bed with the government, other poorer black people see this and see that these people get their wealth from being friends with ANC cadres, and they wish to emulate it, they then think they also got to become big friends with the big guys and live the high life.

Its the support us and we can make your life better or give you wealth. You really think they understand that wealth is taken from others, you think they understand to try and put themselves in others shoes to get an idea of why that is wrong. You think even if they understoof this, many of them care? So what if some white guy with a house and a car has to pay a little more. They couldn't give a damn about your life, not when they don't have the house and car.

I doubt someone like Malema would be able to get a job if he wasn't a high profile political ANC member.

I honestly think Zille should rethink any strategy that calls for a debate against Malema or Zuma or whatever. She should simply do what she has been doing. Give those members of the community what the ANC seems incapable of giving, just keep trying. That to me is the only way of getting people to not like at the ANC as the "heroes", that and a real education.

It's not just about history, it's the fact that the ANC were (and for large parts of the population still are) the only political party active in their communities. Until a few years ago there was no DA in the townships, so why would people be voting for this party they maybe read about when the ANC councillors, local structures and activists are the only ones caring about what's going on in their community.

Obviously some smaller parties are also around, but it's basically ANC vs DA/ID/COPE for now and there's no way to get people to vote for you without being represented in their communities at all.

WilD_CaT, to add to what you said - I also think that Zille and the DA should focus on reducing voter apathy. There were about 3-4 million less voters in this election compared to 2009 and with over 23 million eligible voters about 9-10 million people did not vote. The opposition needs to woo the unhappy people who protested against the ANC by not voting at all - so the political education needs to improve in SA if we are to see any significant change!

@Wild Isn't a bit racist to imply, blacks are not able to educate them self? However, you do have a number of valid points in your statement.

Well the majority still votes anc so clearly not! Even more so in rural areas.

There's another aspect that relates to all of the above - African Culture.
Tshaka is regarded as a hero and role model by most, if not all, black South Africans irrespective of the fact that he was responsible for pillage and bloodshed over vast tracts of the hinterland in a manner similar to Hitler and Stalin. One of his henchmen, Mozilikaze, alone exterminated twenty eight tribes. Throughout Africa the chief has always had supreme power and the surrounding villages and tribes were at the mercy of anyone strong enough to take the cattle, women and young boys. Lower down the chain, lesser chiefs took what they could.

The years of rule by the ANC clearly shows that the same culture is still paramount and every cadre from Zuma down is enriching themselves at an ever increasing rate. Read the recent Mail & Guardian report, "Zuma Incorporated" which details as, far as possible, the current wealth of Zuma and his family and think back a couple of years to when he was existing on handouts from Shabir Shaik. All his talk about corruption is meaningless rhetoric intended for public consumption and is not intended to dissuade the cadres from looting their little fiefdoms.

Other aspects of culture like witch killing and muti murders, while technically illegal, are allowed to flourish.

African culture and western democracy are mutually exclusive and the rest of Africa provides ample proof. Two hundred years of African rule in Liberia and Haiti hold out very little hope for the future in South Africa.
