the Apple iPhone... is it really worth it ?

Touchscreen inertia is all well and good, but i would rather be able to type an sms as fast as i can now...

According to reports smsing will be sloow and from what i know about touchscreens this seems to be the case in general...

Also, i can currently type an sms pretty fast - perhaps even faster than i can type on a full keyboard...
 
I agree with this being a potentially slow interface. I am not fast with a standard 12-key keyboard layout, and I dislike handwriting recognition, so on my P800 I used the on-screen keyboard to do my typing. Fairly fast, but sometimes I would miss letters (not press hard enough) or press too hard or too long and get it registered as two taps. Also, this is with a stylus, which gives you precise control of where to tap. When I use my finger I am HORRIBLY inaccurate (couldn't see where I was pressing when I did, so I pressed two at the same time (put my finger on the border between them).

And don't even talk to me about how easy it is to get the screen dirty and how hard it is to properly clean and scratch-free ... Screen protectors rock, and I couldn't find one for my P800.

I now have a SE P990, and the speed difference is incredible for me. I can feel when I have pressed it, and can let go at once, or keep it pressed in as I choose. A hardware keyboard in my case made me a lot more productive using my phone.

Of course other people will find this more intuitive, but I like tactile feeback from my buttons and keyboards.

I wonder where these reports come from. Who has had hands on experience with the device? :confused:

I was listening to one of my podcasts and David Pogue (the only guy I know of who has really played with the thing) spend some considerable time with the phone and said when it comes to typing it aint no blackberry - on the other hand he said Jobs was really fast with it.

Apparently it looks at the surrounding letters as you type and tries to figure out what you're really trying to type.
