Twas the night before [-]Christmas[/-] the Ashes, when all through the house / not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse...
Hello everyone. Not long now - just one more sleep for those in the UK - before the Ashes begins. We'll be with you from around 9.30am on Wednesday morning, but just to whet your appetite for what is to come in the next two months here's some Ashes goodness. Remember 2009? On this ground James Anderson and Monty Panesar survived 11 overs to thwart Australia. It still hurts. And, if we go back even further, it is 10 years since one of - if not the - greatest series of all-time - here is the story of the first three Tests of 2005 from those that took part. Simon Barnes also provides his evocative reflections on that heady summer.
It's a delight to say that Ricky Ponting will be part of our coverage and here is his first column of the series. He is also picking his Ashes XI, from players he has competed with and against, and so far he has named Matthew Hayden and Alastair Cook as the opening batsman. Who will follow? You can try to pick the final XI and tweet your teams with #PickLikePunter for a chance to win some ESPNcricinfo goodies
And what of the current generation? Could this series define Cook and how he is remembered as an England cricketer. Andrew Miller discusses in The Cricket Monthly, while one of England's greatest captains, Mike Brearley, offers his thoughts on leadership.

I hate that the BBC's TMS listening stream isn't available to us on TuneIn Radio. At least I think it won't be available.

I can't see this being anything than a one sided mauling in favour of Australia. England will have to rekindle the magic of 2005 if they are even to compete, let alone win.

The Ashes series is always good cricket but it's a series where I wish there could be two losers! :D

This england side do not have the players that england side had not even close. Cooke has nowhere near the tactical ability that michael vaughan had.

Aus will have to underperform for england to stand a chance.

Exciting stuff! Got to love the Ashes!

England: AN Cook*, A Lyth, GS Ballance, IR Bell, JE Root, BA Stokes, JC Buttler†, MM Ali, SCJ Broad, MA Wood, JM Anderson

Australia: DA Warner, CJL Rogers, SPD Smith, MJ Clarke*, AC Voges, SR Watson, BJ Haddin†, MG Johnson, MA Starc, JR Hazlewood, NM Lyon

England don't lose a wicket off the first ball! They'll feel they're right in this :p

and it's begun :D

Not really supporting either team, just going to enjoy this from a neutral perspective.

Except CHURCHILL is there anyone backing the English for a series win?

I reckon you'd get AMAZING odds on a series win for England!

Ball keeping very low in these early stages. All going through to the keeper around ankle/shin height.

Thanks for the comments regarding conditions... only so much I can glean from CricInfo :(

It starts...

Hazlewood to Lyth, OUT, early strike! Well caught in the gully. Hazlewood gets his line and length right, a full delivery at middle and offstump, Lyth aiming to work the ball through the leg side and gets a thick outside edge which flies low to David Warner who snaffles it very well

A Lyth c Warner b Hazlewood 6 (10b 1x4 0x6) SR: 60.00
