The Audi Thread

^^ How does Audi Assist get into the car so easily??

Good question, and perhaps it's a bit concerning.

They sent a technican who was able to get in through the passenger door. I didn't watch the full process but it took him about 10 minutes to get into the car. Perhaps Mike can shed some light being a bit more of an Audi fanatic than myself. I had to provide my ID when he arrived but that was about it.

wow, number 5 - that's incredible. What models have you had over the years and how often do you swap out?
Also interested to know what other brands you dabbled with before settling with a new Audi?

I'm going to need some advice in 2 and a half years from you. :)
Do you sell immediately out of motor plan or recommend extending with Audi? The one down-side is the cost of replacement parts + they need to ship from Germany.
First was an A4 1.8. Many moons back. Drove it for a few years them saw an A4 2.8 I had to have. Them a few years again.
Them I moved up to a 1999 A6 in 2001. Felt totally out of my league at first - and like something that I did not deserve. Was odd. I adopted quick though and fell in love with it.
In 2009 my wife wanted me to go to Audi with her to have a noise checked out. I resisted at first - being Sat and in lazy mode. I eventually caved and went with her. While waiting I wondered around and saw a 2007 A6 3.2 FSi Quattro. This thing was a thousand leagues better than what I had. Asked the salesman to run some numbers and it was affordable. Purchased.
Drove that beauty to 181,000kms with no issues. Only reason I traded her in and got my A5 was because of the mileage - and with me starting working in Hartees and clocking 180kms a day I decided to let her go before I devalued her too much.
If you read back a few pages you can witness the emotional turmoil I went though. Seriously loved that vehicle - and still regret trading it in. But I had too.

Between the last A6 and my current A5 I tried out a BM 320d, A Santa Cruz, some other Hyundai and some other brand I cannot remember. Looked at Jeep and a 5 series BM, then just got fed up. Nothing was comparing to what I was used to.
Went to Audi Airport and they had this A5 3.2 FSi Quattro Sportback sitting there. Beautiful vehicle.
I had not considered an A5 as an option but this car got me to jump inside.
Inside I saw B&O sound, MMI with iPod connection, sunroof, etc.. Salesman told me about S-Line suspension and some other goodies and it was sold. Got a real good deal with great specs.

Each new car came along purely because I saw something better - except for the last A6. That one I had to let go. Being out of motor plan does not bug me. I have a real good mechanic here in Edenvale that works in German cars and has often done a better job than Audi - at a fraction of the cost.
My wife's A4 had a problem that Audi could not resolve after 3 attempts. Then it went out of motor plan and I took it to my mechanic. Foxed straight away.

So Ye. Find yourself someone to take care of your precious when out of motor plan then no need to trade her. Unless something better grabs you :)

With the mileage I pack on nowadays, I plan on trading every 2 years or so and see my monthly payments as leasing my vehicle.

I locked my keys in my A4 by mistake. Called the AA, and the guy was in my car in under 30 seconds. Blew my mind. I expected it to be a lot harder.

Jan is our resident Audi encyclopedia. He should be along shortly to advise.
I just love and drive the car :)

I've also just moved to Audi

Took ownership of a 2013 A3 Sportback 1.8tfsi S-tronic! Loving how smooth that 'box is! Coming from a focus ST 5-cyl I though I might miss the effortless power, but I have been pleasantly surprised with the 1.8tfsi.

The clincher though is the standard sound system in the new A3's. The ST had decent sound, but the A3 is excellent considering its the standard pack.
That S-Tronic is hot hey. Love the sound it make when shifting at high speed too.
My A5 is my introduction to S-Tronic and am very impressed.

Latest BMW 8-speed dominates the S-tronic. So try it out before you go for M. Smit's vacillating opinions.

I get the impression that Audi dealerships offer poor trade in values (Cape Town and surrounds?). BMW on the other hand would try to really sweeten the pot by offering a good trade in value?

BMW/SMG Canal Walk seem to get quite a few Audi trade ins...

Hey all. So the damn clip/latch on the centre arm rest in my A4 B7 (2007) is broken. Anybody know where I can get an affordable replacement lid locally? I really can't justify spending R1k+ on it...

Might want to give Goldwagen a try, though that is a pretty specific part. Otherwise, one could get the part number from a dealer and see if you can't find anything at online retailers like eBay or so

I've heard you need to replace the entire armrest.

Got a question for existing Audi owners, maybe someone will know the answer to this question:

Is it possible to have the MMI system upgraded to MMI Navigation Plus after the vehicle has been purchased? (Audi A3) If not, are there any solutions to getting navigation fitted to the car?

Current A3 I assume? Technically, it is possible, but would be very costly. Would love to do this as well for my A3, but the 5 figure cost (estimate) makes it prohibitively expensive to me and I'd rather just use a phone or generic GPS, even though it does look quite out of place in the car.

There are options. I was going to get one retrofitted to my A6, but was like R7.5k.
Cheaper to stick an old S3 on the dash.

Some dude in the A5OC forum managed to update his to Google maps. Now that is cool.

Looked into it a bit more... Main unit is likely going to be no less than 10 grand on it's own, plus a few more (around 3 grand?) for the larger screen. Add in the touchpad unit which would mean swapping out your entire center section almost, and the various antennas, receivers etc... It isn't practical in any way. Likely going to end up a good bit more than 20 grand once it is done, while screwing up your warranty and any coverage for electrical systems (which is A LOT on these modern cars), meaning you'd likely blow over your entire maintenance plan as well. This is also ignoring the amount of coding that would likely be required to get everything running, and the chance that you could brick the car entirely.

It isn't even something like a chip that can be removed easily, they'll notice the bigger screen and so on, if they don't get a giant error code once they plug it in to scan, so you can't even try to hide it.

Don't do it.
