The Audi Thread

There is no shift on a CVT, so how can you say it's slower or faster?

You are possibly/probably confusing Tiptronic and Multitronic.

The former is an "old school" gearbox with torque converter instead of a clutch and yes quite slow compared to DSG.

Multitronic is CVT and works like a scooter on a belt/pulley system without any actual gears so there is nothing to change. The car revs up and the speedo catches up to it.

A DSG is actually nothing like an automatic. It's essentially a manual gearbox that uses electronic clutches to change gear for you. The reason it's so fast is that it switches from one clutch to the other when shifting. So if you think of it like a human doing it then the first clutch comes out when pulling away in first and the second goes in for second. When you engage second the clutch for third gear goes in etc.

Is this paddle shifting then? You can see it's slower than DSG.

I will keep this in mind, thank you. Might be worth the schlep. Can you please tell me what you've done on your GTI and the costs?

Shoe I don't want to lie now but my major/annual service was 1450 odd from what I remember. He then recommend they do a sump service to avoid the oil pump packing up and that was just under a grand from what I remember.

The cambelt service for the GTI is only at 180000km but with the car at 145000odd now he recommended I do it at the next service instead of waiting as he has another (highly modified though) GTI5 that just dropped the cambelt at 165000km or so.

Quoted me verbally about R3500 for the cambelt job but I'm sure that excludes the water pump.

Doesn't seems like a Multitronic at all, but if it is then it's probably paddle shifting or put into sports mode where it has artificial gears in place.

*** never mind opened in YouTube app and I see it stays it's Multitronic. Earlier he drives so leisurely that it's hard to see the effect but you'll notice the revs never drops or dip even though the speed increases.

Nothing is faster than DSG. But then these offer very different drives for very different purposes.

Got a call from Audi Airport. A printed circuit is burnt (or something like that). They are ordering the part and will fit it tomorrow. I get my baby back tomorrow afternoon!! Yay.

Then back to the panel beater on Thu to fix the fckups they made. Sigh...

I have 14k kms left on motor plan. Asked them how transmission issues like this are handled when out of motor plan. She says Audi SA have a plan in place to assist customers out of motor plan on the S-Tronic gearboxes so I must not worry. Does anyone know anything about this?

Its probably a loan and a % discount on the repair depending on how long after your mplan expired.

Can you get a quote on another 1 or 2 years extension? I'm interested to see what they charge and if you are able to negotiate.

I asked for a ballpark when I had my car serviced in Dec. I do high mileage (around 200km a day 3 times a week), so need a mileage extension over a time extension. This costs a lot more. IE: A 2 year 40k kms would only see me 1 year. To get the 2 years I would need 70k kms to 80k kms and that was around R70k or something mad.
I can't remember the exact details, but will be getting specifics tomorrow when I collect my car.

Rather flog it just before 100k kms and buy a new model I reckon. Going to be hard to match the specs I got with this car though so this whole setup bothers me a bit. I don't want to flog my car, but I also don't want a motorplanless car. Third party warranties are also something I need to investigate.

Edit: At the rate my car lives at either Audi Airport or a panel beater, I may actually get away with a standard 2 year extension :):)

You think the 200ms shift time of your ZF is faster than the 8ms of DSG? :erm:

Subjectively, I didn't discern a difference when I test drove the Golf R and Audi S3. But if those are the facts I obviously cannot debate it :).

Having said that, again subjectively, I think the ZF box is superior in terms of the driving experience. It's simply superb in both sedate and fast driving. A contributing factor to me choosing the BMW over the Golf or the Aaudi.

Okay - so with all this transmission talk (following it very closely), is my S-tronic transmission the same as the DSG? If so, exactly or close?

I have to admit, I love the drive of the S-tronic - even though it broke so easily. I floored it away from the panel beater yesterday just to hear the soft click as the gears shifted. Woody material that.

They're essentially the same thing, except VW calls it DSG (due to the acronym standing for direct-shift gearbox) and Audi calls it S-tronic.

You hear clicks from the gear change? Maybe I have bad hearing; all I hear from mine is the roar from the engine.

Ye - but can only hear it when I floor it and have the windows open.
Maybe click is not the right way to describe it, but there is definitely an audible sound when it shifts. Quite a cool sound at that.
