The Audi Thread

Using kW is like using specs of smart phones to determine performance.

The down-tuned 1.8T will have plenty enough low-range torque.

In isolation perhaps but it is relevant.

It performs piss poor for a 1.8t. It is slower than lowly Korean 1.6 NA cars.

That is very interesting. Didn't even know there was a new Conquest.

Not that I doubt you, but are we sure there's no turbo on that Kia 1.6?

Does seem like a bit of a high revver to get there so might not be as driveable even with the high peak power.

We certainly have come a long way.

I saw the torque figure.

Even with that it is slow.

I'm not going to get any of them, never said I was. Merely pointed out that it performs worse than far cheaper NA 1.6 cars to which you said KW means nothing and it performs fine.

It is not designed for people looking for performance. It's for people looking for an entry level luxury car with all the comforts, who do not need speed, and have plenty of torque to get to their driving speed, possibly sticking to all speeding limits, etc.

Entry level standard cars would not be able to do this, even if the kW is higher.

That's the point.

And no, it's not just about the badge... As you know. ;)

PostmanPot, are there any visual distinguishing factors between the 1.8 88KW and 1.8 125KW models, e.g. badging or in the interior?

2.0, mine averaged around 7.5 - 8L/100km. I recall filling up for about R850 and getting about 650km.

2.0T, well... I could get 8.5 - 9L/100km, but I do a bit more than that. R850 gets me about 550km.

Guessing 1.8T will be in between, but rather go B7...

Hope this helps.

aahh ok not bad

i average around 800-1000km a month and currently budget around 1500 for petrol so i wont have to change my budget if i manage to get below 10l/100km

whats service costs like ?

and if breaks need changing and clutch

im not in the market to buy yet but i like thinking and dreaming a little :p

I like the jetta 5s but audi can be bought at the same price for what i think is a better car. mercs go for around 20-30k more and i dont like BMWs

other nice cars i like are the Hondas ...but not so sure about them as well

What do you have currently and what year is it?

i have a 07 mk1 1.4i ...which has become very heavy on fuel

R250 gets me +-220km if im lucky and this is city driving and i try avoid traffic as much as possible

I don't think so. I think the 88kW might only come in the S trim, and not the SE.

People are also suggesting that these are designed for rental cars, R30k cheaper so the rental companies will save where possible.

Of course we wouldn't buy one, but they do have a purpose.

I started looking at Jetta 5s before my first Audi, so glad I found A4 B7. Much more car for less money.

Servicing isn't bad at all, I guess R1,500 - R2,000 for minor + spark plugs.

I did the brakes on my 2.0 before selling, can't recall the price but nothing exorbitant.

In fact, servicing and maintenance is in line with Polo/Golf/Jetta, which is another reason I went Audi A4.

Sheep in wolf's clothing comes to mind then :)

Yip, though if you speak to people who drive the cars, you'll see they're not pap at all.

Like I mentioned, they're plenty torquey. And judging a car based on kW and torque, to a degree, is futile. Many more factors at play.

Not to stir the boat, but I find them quite pap myself (and it's not because I'm used to higher performance cars, I'm comparing with their direct competitors here).

On the whole 88kW 1.8T motor issue, I definitely suggest driving both the detuned and the full tune (125kW) cars back to back to see how they compare. I drove the 88kW 1.8T for ****s and giggles (having previously driven the 125kW), and it was as disappointing as my old 1.8L Civic EXI sedan (which incidentally made 103kW from it's naturally aspirated engine, because high revving vtec).

Though I fully agree with PP - gearing, weight, torque, RPM and many other factors influence how a car feels to drive, it's a lot more than just power. For what it's worth I got better fuel consumption in a 2.4L Accord than I did in a 1.8L Civic, and that was purely down to my driving style and how it was compatible with the one and not the other.

Of course getting an automatic designed to utilise the power band effectively may help somewhat.

Those look like 16" rims to me, in the previously posted pic. Assuming the 125kw variety would come in 17" rims or larger.

Audi has revealed that the its new A4’s remarkable 0.23 drag coefficient comes from being simply too boring for air to bother with.

‘It is a well-known fact that air presented with a further distance to travel will move faster and this is the basic principle for how aeroplane wings work,’ explained Audi’s aerodynamics boss Aaron Dinamixbos. ‘But what is less well known is that air will also move more quickly if it isn’t distracted going, “Oh wow, look, the new Audi A4”.’

‘If the air is not distracted by anything interesting, it will simply move quickly and efficiently over the body of the car,’ Dinamixbos continued. ‘This is why the new A4 is styled to attract no attention whatsoever from air. Or indeed people.’

Dinamixbos admitts that this will naturally have some effect on the way people interact with the car. ‘We do not expect anyone to refer to this as the new A4,’ he confessed. ‘They will simply say, “Oh Jesus, there’s a complete twat in some sort of ****ing Audi up my arse, again”.

I'd rather own the afore mentioned vehicle than some, aggro-styled BMW :D
