The Audi Thread

S-Tronic gearbox fsked out again today. Had a minor fit in the reception area of Audi Airport. Could hear a pin drop after I was done with profanities.

Any way, should get it back in the AM. Undrivable. And a nice R5.5k bill.

Heya people

So, I need at least 2 tyres for my A4 2.0. Supa Quick currently having specials, quoted me R1650 for a Firestone 216/55R16. I think it's the TZ700. Is this a good price? Wait, first, is this a good tyre? If not, what should I be looking at? (And any idea as to cost?)

Sorry to hear bud. It seems that those gearboxes either work spectacularly or fail epically. Is it still covered by warranty?

Nope. Just before 140k kms now. Do around R35k kms per annum and been just over a year since I exited motor plan. Thankfully the first failure was within motorplan.
I have a motorite 2 year warranty, but that didn't cover it. Was for my own expense. Sigh...

The biatch is, I will continue to purchase S-Tronic Audi's I think. I love the acceleration. Hopefully this was the last of the failures and my A5 can see me happily to at least 200k kms. No rush to trade it in. Love the thing too much.

EDIT: What really hit hard was I had my gearbox service just 1.5 month's ago. Total service bill was R11.5k with R4k of that being for the gearbox oil and stuff. Then 1.5 month's later, my gearbox drops all it's oil and I have to replace it again. The failure was the plastic gearbox housing. It cracked and leaked out all the oil. The actual broken part was only R450. The rest of the bill for this failure was replacing the bloody oil.

My A5 has the same gearbox, had the mechatronics replaced at 60 000kms and it is at 98 000kms now and no hassles with it. Touch wood! I am worried about the clutches, any idea how long they last? Do they give you some kind of an indication of end of life before failure?

However I totally agree with you, love the car and the gearbox. If it had to be stolen today I would go out and buy the exact same model eventhough a normal manual 2wd would be cheaper to run and save fuel.

I will go A5 again too if need be (although I do have my eye on an A7 too). Only difference is I would go diesel vs my current FSi - purely for the fuel saving (and a little more grunt).

I honestly don't know much about S-Tronics so can't tell you anything on the clutch - sorry ): Hopefully mine will last out as most of my driving is JHB to Hartees and 90% freeway, so tend to live in 7th gear. So high mileage, but easy going on the car.

My mechatronics unit failed at 88k kms. Was R7k to repair, but under motor plan so all good. Been 48k kms since repair and that has not failed again so holding thumbs that that will not be a repeat failure.

I hear you, but when you go for a diesel is it not a whole new ball game in terms of maintenance costs? There's also just something about that tractor sound that puts me off =P

I guess this is the best place to ask. I've been trying to read up a lot on buying a used Audi, A5 in particular. But the one thing that seems to stand out in all the posts, is the auto gearbox. But I want an auto. Just wanted to know what your thoughts are on this : http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-cars-bakkies/milnerton/2011-audi-a5-sportback-2-0-tfsi-quattro-s+tronic/1001737613990910329181009

What put's me off is the mileage - it's a bit higher than I'd like. I plan on keeping it around 5 years, and am currently doing 20,000 a year, so thats almost 200,000km then.

It seems pretty much on par with what's out there. Milage is actually not that bad, remember the lower you go the more you will pay.

My aim would be sub 240k with around to 90 000kms mark, looking out for features you like. The key here is not to rush into a deal.

One more thing. I get that they work and feel different, but from a pure reliability and repair cost angle, should I avoid the multitronic? Or should I look at them also?

Start listening @4 minutes 20 seconds, for a higher mileage car (100,000km+), get a petrol engine over diesel. Don't get a multitronic CVT gearbox, they can be quite expensive and have to be replaced in their entirety, can't be repaired if I understood him correctly.

Seems S Tronic isn't all that cheap either.

Not only that, but you lose on trade in.
The dealer wanted to reduce R80k from my wife's A4 multitronic trade-in, and ended up splitting it with her - so she lost R40k.
Said the gearbox needed replacing or something at 180k kms and that affected trade-in value. True or not - not sure.

When I passed the Audi stand at the Kyalami motorshow they had try RS7 revving a bit .... Fantastic sound ... Love the RS6 though....
