The Audi Thread

Audi To Rename Its Cars

The Ingolstadt-based brand has a new naming strategy to differentiate between internal combustion engine and electric power.

Rumours have been plentiful about Audi’s new naming structure, but finally Audi has confirmed it. At Audi AG’s Annual Media Conference, CEO Markus Duesmann said the new next-generation Audi A4 will be sold as the A5, while the A6 will become the A7.

Essentially, Audi products with odd numbers (3, 5, 7) will be powered by internal-combustion engines, while the even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8) will have electric powertrains. We’re already seeing this with the launch of the Audi Q8 e-tron, and it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to image the ICE-powered Q8 to become the Q7/Q9.

But what about the current-generation electric vehicles with the e-tron name? Well, Duesmann has confirmed it won’t be dropped, which is interesting, as Mercedes-Benz is considering offloading its EQ brand with new vehicles due in 2024, while BMW will continue to use the ‘i’ as a way of showcasing its EV range.

We’re expecting a quiet year locally for Audi South Africa, but Audi global has quite a few products on the way, with a successor to the Audi A4 earmarked for a global debut at some point in 2023. The Audi A6 is due for an update soon too. Audi is expected to continue to build ICE-powered vehicles until the early 2030s even though it won’t introduce any new ICE models beyond 2026.

Reminds me of this gem from over 10 years ago...

Yeah it ended up being a full rebuild, basically. The only parts that were salvageable were the actual block and the crank. The rest was all trash. Off the top of my head, the following was replaced:

  • Head & forged cams
  • Valves
  • Valve springs, guides, seats and seals (viton)
  • Piston cooling jets (2x were collapsed)
  • Forged pistons, gudgeon pins, conrods (shot peened), big end and small end bearings
  • Oil filter housing
  • Vacuum pump
  • Water pump, pulleys, idlers, timing belt
  • Oil pump (replaced with a built-up unit as the originals ones were known to go bad)
  • Oil pump balance shafts were deleted
  • A few other odds and ends that I'm forgetting
It's taken so long as the parts were very hard to get hold of, especially the smaller niggly bits like the piston cooling jets, some dowels that go between the gearbox and engine block that were missing and had to be fabricated, the oil pump was a custom fit so a lot of work into spacing it out and making sure the oil pressure was good and the bypass was working properly, etc etc.

Did you do the rebuild? I can't remember if we spoke about the rebuilt, a good friend builds and rebuilds a lot of these sorts of engines but mostly with forged internals capable of 600bhp+.

Ja, full rebuild. Only the block and crank could be reliably salvaged, the rest was in various states of disrepair.

These engines are easily capable of 500hp with supporting mods, but you’d have to throw a lot of dosh at it to get there (and hardware like uprated injectors, K04 turbo, forged rods and pistons) although I don’t think I’d do anything of the sort - maybe a stage 1 tune to waken the engine up a bit :)

Isn't the aftermarket stuff cheaper than OEM parts?

Yes and no, some parts are a bit cheaper, others pricier, others more or less the same. I have yet to get the invoice with everything included but parts so far are around R35k. The majority of that cost was sourcing a new head, and lots of small odds and ends that all added up.

The major changes are shot peened rods, 0.50 oversize pistons, modified oil pump (the OG one is known to fail) and billet camshafts. Other things that have been replaced with original parts were the valves, seals and guides, water pump, timing belt, oil filter housing, oil cooler, water pump, and some ancillary parts like cooling hoses and various gaskets and seals.

All from Audi?

Some more yuck from what the previous owner did:

Grey silicone goop everwhere along with collapsed o-rings:

Plenty of crud inside the coolant pipes indicating this poenskop ran straight tap water for quite a while:

Block assembly going well:

Looking good.
How people can be so cheap that they don't use anti-freeze I will never know.
Granted it is often lazy/cheap mechanics and not owners that do it but still.

When I got the car it was pissing out fluids everywhere. Fuel out the fuel pump seal in the tank, fuel out the high pressure fuel pump inlet, coolant from the expansion tank and the flange to the heater matrix, water out the headlight spray jets, gearbox oil out the oil cooler, engine oil out the valve cover and PCV, etc.

My best guess is the car developed a coolant leak, and the owner just got tired of putting in coolant so he just put in plain water as time went on as that's the cheapskate route.

There were more delays, but first startup should be tomorrow, and if all goes well and oil pressures etc are good, pickup should be on Wednesday - fingers crossed.

Bought an A4 B6 1.8T Avant as a little rebuild project a while ago.
Started fixing up & replaced turbo & looks like it's running a non-standard map.
So busy checking around for a standard map to can compare what was done here
Also looks like I'll need to do oil pump/cooler.

Nice, always nice to see more Avants in Gqeberhistan.

Is it a silver one by any chance? AWM engine? I'll ask a mate of mine if he has one for you tomorrow.

EDIT: I'd recommend speaking to Nisma Performance in Commercial Road RE: a map for your engine. https://goo.gl/maps/E2JBgmwABw55QCri9

Nice, I don't often see black Avant's around, especially not B6 ones. Most seem to be maroon, blue, silver or white.

I'm rocking a Phantom Black B7 myself:

Nice looking B7
I still have a quite a few things to fix before i send in for respray. Clear coat peeling & few dings passenger side

Mine also needs some work. Got a big dent on the bonnet, peeling clearcoat on the rear passenger side door and an ugly gash on the driver side door. Plus the paint could do with a proper polish as well.

But I need to get the car back from the mechanic before all that can happen.

Merbeda often has parts available, if you need. I got a few things from them a while back - rear wiper arm, centre brake light, side skirts, etc.

Found a B6 being stripped, just need to make sure what I want is in working order. He will me making a pretty penny off me

Last week Monday I was doing some last minute shopping before my trip down to Durban and in heavy traffic my A7 gave a "Reduce oil level" error. Thought I would get the shopping done and then swing past Audi to do it for me. All of a sudden the gearbox made a weird gear change and then a "Gearbox malfunction: No reverse gear" message popped up. I could still drive but the gearbox revved high in first and skipped second gear completely. Went to Audi who reduced the oil level first, reset the error warnings and then ran the diagnostics again and as I feared it came up with a mechatronic issue.

Quote from Audi for the mechatronics parts only is R76 570.00.

Morne from Audi East Rand came and spoke to me about the issue and said he would get hold of Audi SA and see if they would cover it as the Freeway plan only ran out 5k km's ago. He also arranged a A3 for me to go on holiday with which I doubt any other car manufacturer would do. Yesterday he let me know that Audi SA would cover most of the costs and I would only be liable for 16k which is not small change but much better than 76k + labor.

This is the biggest fear of anyone with a DSG or S tronic box
