The Audi Thread

What were the symptoms that pointed to a flywheel replacement?
What are the symptoms that says you need a new flywheel?

The engine sounds horrible, even for a diesel, and every time I came to a stop the car would stop and then feel like it lurches forward a few cm. According to Audi it was the engine mounts so I had them replaced in December but the problem persisted. Took the car back in January and they took off the gearbox and diagnosed it as the fooked flywheel. I've also seen a few YouTube videos about the same problem on the dual mass flywheel.

I asked the same, I presume heavy shudder on pull off, pointing the flywheel internals starting to fail, I am guessing though as I have never had a DMF failure.
My 3.0TDi makes a chattering sound sometimes on startup. Doesn’t matter it’s it’s hot or cold. Other than that it’s fine. Been doing this for the last 70k. I always suspected the DMF so was curious what other symptoms there was.

I have no idea what Audi dealership you go to and I am sure there are good ones or at least good technicians but in my experience, most OEM dealerships are full of nonsense and simply replace parts until the issue disappears. On of the reasons I prefer places like VAG Spec or the Touareg Master, Stephan, who know what to look for, how to solve it and generally don't BS you along the way. Anyway, hopefully it is the flywheel but maybe have the clutch packs assessed as well as the gearbox will be off/out.

What year is the car? Chatter on startup could also be things like timing chains or the copper injector seals.

1 Audi uses very thin oil that helps with better fuel consumption. This is fine for new engines but as tolerance get bigger the oil is not great. I would get a slightly thicker oil. This would eliminate lifter noise.

2 injector noise is normal on diesel cold start. If it is getting louder stop using 10ppm diesel. 50 pp is better for an engine and makes injectors less noisy. You can als run a good diesel injector cleaner.

3. you might need a valve clean. the EGR kills engines with soot build up on the inlet valves taht could also lead to noise.

5. dual mass flywheels do get noisy over time.

Audi East Rand. Have had my car serviced there under the Freeway plan since I bought it but now that I am paying cash it is time to move on.

It might be something else but mine started like that as well.

Like I said, it can make the noise on hot startup too. I’ve done dpf egr delete.

I’m still using OE 5W30 VW507 spec. What do you recommend?

2012 should be similar to my CRC engine, copper injector seals are a known failure point, should be replaced by 160k km's. There could be other reasons for the startup sound though...
Mines CDU engine code.

I personally would not take it to Audi for this repair, even if you have to tow the vehicle out of there, they've already wasted your time and money replacing engine mounts and they are guaranteed to be more expensive than a good indy and also replace unnecessary stuff and at the same time not do work that is relatively inexpensive now but save you big in the future.

It can't hurt to go to 5W40 on an higher mileage engine but it’s probably not going to make a huge difference either way.

Can't remember the exact spec oil but when I went to audi to get oil, the spec they quoted me on was too thin.it was the euro spec oil I pressume.
I went with Liqui Moly 20250218_180551.jpg

The flywheel on my A7 needs to be replaced so I got a quote from Audi. R50 180.71 including installation.

Getting quotes from independent workshops now :(
If you would like to pm me I can send you my brother's details. He is in jhb , is an ex Audi tech. Quite jacked up with their cars and can probably source one cheaper

check to go to a 10w30. Your book should show what can be used.
in your book should be a scale based on the temp of the area you live .

similar to this below , a 5w is to thin for SA conditions ( 5 is artic weather)

VW Baywindow Bus - Engine Oil Selection

Manufacturers stopped putting useful info in owners manual a while back, there isn't even a dip stick:
