This is a thread for those who are looking to eat out but are on a budget or who want good value for money. I just came back from Scrooges in the old Randburg Waterfront after eating 2KG's of prawns with my fiancé. The waiter mentioned the specials they have through out the week and I realised that there must be loads of places that have these.

Please post any restaurants that you go to that have awesome specials like 2 for 1 etc. I have put together a little list to get us started:

Mondays:
Spur 2 for 1 burger night

Tuesdays:
Scrooges Terrific Tuesday R30 for a schnitzel or baby chicken plus beer or coke:love:

Wednesdays:
Steers Wacky Wednesday R35
Scrooges R10 500ml draught from 12pm till 7pm

Thursdays:
Panarotti’s uncapped pizza R50

Anytime:
Scrooges Baby Chicken with starch and veggies R50
Scrooges 1KG Prawns R125 includes 3 sauces and a starch:love:
Scrooges Breakfast R22(R11 between 8-8:30am)
Panarottis Sunday kids eat free

We have a local St Elmos. They advertise 1kg Prawns and chips for R125. So I bought a few times. Taste good. BUT. I could never figure how on earth I could finish 1kg and chips. So I got a take away, weighed the prawns.. came to 550g. Took the tails and heads off... ended at 220g?

So I wonder how this works!?!:cry::confused:

Well I often make 1KG of prawns a home... once you shell them you will most likely get less than 600g meat. The amount ties up nicely with the amount I get at Scrooges so I am pretty sure they ain't screwing me.

Remember that it's 1kg uncooked weight that every place serves, seafoods lose a large amount of moisture when cooked. No restaurant I know of weighs food after cooking.

I used to love Scrooge! Not so much anymore. They lost a bit of their "value for money" niche. Now I'd rather do Thunder Guns.

Well post us a thunder gun special then?

the prawns you buy in the packet is never 1kg so i dont know how they get that ...it is always 800g when packed ...and thats frozen ..when defrosted it loses alot more

alot of resturants do tell you thats its uncooked weight ...but still losing half its weight is not possible

You are probably right. I usually buy cleaned prawns, always though that the were a KG but I do notice they shrink a lot when grilled or fried.

Cape Town Fish Market: Greenstone Mall (might be all branches)
Tuesday: buy one sushi dish, get a second free.

California Sweet Chilli Prawn Tempura Sushi - do it, your mouth will love you!

Romans in greenstone/stoneridge used to have a special R37 or so for 2 lasagnes on tuesdays. Stoneridge has a general "half price tuesdays" thing so each place has a different deal.

Mimmos (all branches) has cheap(er) pizza/pasta on mondays and tuesdays. Alfredo about R40, chicken maestro pizza R50, Hawaiian pizza I think R35.

For anytime sushi, tataki just outside montecasino has R129 for a bowl of soup (your choice), one sashimi plate, then all you can eat for the rest of the stuff on the conveyor belt.

And Ming Seng in Kempton Park is R99 for a starter (soup), Sweet and Sour Prawns, Chicken Chop Suey, Sweet and Sour Pork (or a chicken dish) all served with fried rice, followed by a bow tie and jasmine green tea.

First class food, though the setting is slightly dull and unimpressive.

Yip thats at all CTFM's. . . great deal.

Or actually not as Sushi is horribly over priced :p

I totally agree Grimspoon, their sushi is way too expensive for the quantity and the size of the servings, however, the two for one special make it reasonable. If only barely :)

Uncapped sushi from sakura in blackheath from sunday to thursday at R125(i think) per person.
