The Best Cross Over SUV

I am seeing some sort of trend developing which I like and have taken an interest in...

The small SUV / Cross Over vehicles.

On my radar are the following models, which are more or less in the same price range.
- Nissan Juke
- Ford EcoSport
- Renualt Duster
- VW Cross Polo (Polo Cross?)
- Nissan X-Gear

I am finding it hard to decide which one is the best all specs compared - price, basics (EBD, ABS etc), bluetooth etcetera.

Which do you rate the best?

Lets use R250,000 as the absolute limit.

P.S. a comparison with any other vehicle in this price bracket is also great i.e. sedan / hatch / other.

This is a somewhat pointless segment in my opinion. These cars can hardly do more than a normal sedan and they are quite ugly. That being said the Juke is one of the best selling SUV's in South Africa. Must count for something.
 
Pity that budget cannot stretch another 40k in order to get you into a Subaru XV :)

Google Subaru XV v/s Land Rover Defender (On Youtube) and see just how good it is - a true crossover vehicle.

Agreed, and VW would probably agree with you too. Cross Polo is simply a Polo with beefed up and raised suspension, and it's unlikely that the designers never intended it to do any off road work.

If that's your criteria, the duster is the only car that can maybe sneak onto the list.
 
Have a look at the Ford Kuga.
It has a lot more boot space and great looks.

Kuga is a good car, but cost more than R250K. It's actually quite expensive compared to the alternatives in it's segment. You get what you pay for!

Correct - I spoke to a journalist this morning who had just got off the plane - coming from the launch of the Duster in Cape Town, and it is apparently a damned nice "cheap" SUV - very well worth looking at and very capable too.
 
On that list, Ford or Nissan. I've never driven the EcoSport, but I have driven the turbo Juke. Was a nice drive. At your budget you cannot get the turbo Juke, but you can get the little 1.0 Turbo Ford, which has better figures on paper than the naturally aspirated 1.6 Juke. Also, the Juke has a tiny luggage are (251L), where the EcoSport is quite a bit bigger (362L)...

Fit and finish is not that nice though... Looks like a NP200 inside.

It does look rather capable off road, looking at some YouTube videos, but on the road the Ford and Nissan will blow it away.
 
News just in, QT and spiderz think a Freelander 2 and a Jeep Patriot is small SUV under R250K.

i am looking at gettting the Ecosport as well. i test drove the 1.0 Ecoboost model. What an awesome little engine that is. would be my choice.

Ok, wow, never really looked at their prices for new. (R434k-562k). Saw a few 2nd hand one's on junkmail for +-R150k.
And probably closer to a Real SUV. :p

Hmm...he didn't specify new or 2nd Hand.

Hey Brenden... Is a CrossPolo and an X-Gear small SUV's? He asked for other suggestions and I gave him one, while also recommending from his list in a previous post.
