Hi

Im new to the forum and I find it very informative and insightful.

I drive a 2006 Land Rover Discovery 3 everyday to work and like most 4x4 drivers these days I am starting to really feel it in my pocket. The fuel consumption isn't that monstrous but with the petrol price it is today it is becoming a bit silly and expensive driving it on a daily basis.

So does anybody have any ideas on a solution? Im looking at a car with good fuel consumption and an enjoyable drive at the same time and a price range of between R100K - R150K. I'm thinking about a 2006 Polo 1.6. Would this be a good buy? Any alternatives?

For ultimate fuel economy, get a Citroen C1 or Peugeot 107. World Engine of the Year 2008 in the 1.0l category (developed by Toyota) - it'll use about 5l/100km in town.

The top-of-the-line model comes with 4 airbags, electric windows A/C etc for R112k. I test drove one for my g/f about 2 weeks ago and it's actually quicker and more comfortable than you'd think.

Bit off topic, but anyway. :)

Both of those cars are actually insanely cheap.

Yip alot of 4x4 owners are feeling it!
I agree with the Polo 1.6, nice little car, very good fuel economy with enough power! They very common but still look good. I wouldnt brave a French car.

Hi Hotwheels - thank's for the post I was about to post a similar one. I'm also looking for a run-about to keep mileage off my car.

JK8 - My wife has a 1.6 Golf5 so I was thinking of a Polo.

What are folk's thoughts on the new Toyota's? (Auris, Yaris, etc)

Well the 107/C1 are mechanically Toyotas and built on a Toyota production line. They'll also get a good 3-4l/100km better than a Polo 1.6 in urban driving.

First, welcome to the forum, cool nickname!

Second, I'd reccomend seeing a psycologist to work though your issues that have resulted in you needing a big 4x4 to 'compensate for size' ;) (<- that means I'm joking)

Third, how about getting a bike to commute to work (BMW F650 seems to be the commuter of choice) and keep riding the 4x4 on weekends?

a corolla 140i ... plenty oomf!!! (trust me it aint no slouch) ... and fuel economy is excellent!!!! ... i think coming from the landy to the polo you will feel how small the polo is and might not like it on that basis, corolla has plenty of space!

Thanks for the information. I'm definitely going to look at the Citroen and Peugeot options.

Anybody own a Mazda 2 Dynamic?

I like the Kia and Hyundai models...

I will never go for Toyota again...
(Though if spares are an issue - they probably the best...)

I am not interested in Mazda either...

German cars are good. Korean cars are good. Jap cars are good.

;)

My 2c.
