BMW to update entire model line-up with Neue Klasse style and tech in the next two years

BMW’s new era has finally commenced with the recent unveiling of its first Neue Klasse model, the all-new iX3. Ushering in a whole new style and technological blueprint for the Bavarian brand, it will influence other models far sooner than you might have thought.

BMW is set to launch more than 40 new or facelifted models in the next two years in an almost desperate bid to prevent the rest of its line-up from appearing dated. However, the current internal combustion (ICE) models won’t move over to the new platform as such, but they will be extensively updated.

In a recent interview with Autocar, BMW’s Neue Klasse chief Mike Reichelt said that while most of the existing models will retain their current body structure, the updates will integrate the most relevant Neue Klasse aspects, such as frontal styling, the new Panoramic iDrive system, ADAS driver assistance features and other digital technologies.

"We have never done this before, but it is necessary when you look at the technology such as the computing power and the user interface. There have been so many big jumps,” Reichelt told the UK publication.

“The quantum leaps in technology in the Neue Klasse are so big that if we don’t integrate this technology in the current portfolio, it will feel like an old portfolio. With the Neue Klasse, we’ve made so much progress it’s like we skipped a model generation, so we have to do it across the range.”

As a result, the updates will be far more extensive than with traditional facelifts, he added.

BMW SA boss says X3 production is ‘maxed out’

BMW Group SA’s boss says production of the X3 at Plant Rosslyn is “maxed out”, adding that around half of the units currently being built in Mzansi are PHEVs…

- Production at Plant Rosslyn is “maxed out”, says BMW SA boss
- “About half” of X3 units currently being built in SA are PHEVs
- PHEVs represent approximately 10% of X3 sales in South Africa

The head of BMW Group South Africa says production of the G45-series X3 at Plant Rosslyn is “maxed out”, adding that about half of the units being built locally are the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version.

Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa, was speaking during an interview conducted in Cars.co.za’s custom-built podcast booth at Naamsa’s South African Auto Week 2025 in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape at the start of October.

Back in 2018, Plant Rosslyn switched from producing the 3 Series to building the G01-series X3, before changing to the G45-series X3 in October 2024 (and becoming the only facility in the world producing the X3 30e xDrive PHEV). Van Binsbergen described the move to an SUV as “great strategy”.

“The [BMW] Group saw that the sedan market was declining worldwide, and the SUV market was growing. So, they predicted that we needed more SUV capacity and switched our plant to X3. So, great strategy and a great result,” he told us.

BMW X3 Rugged (2025) Price & Specs

The new BMW X3 Rugged launches in South Africa as an adventure-ready version of the locally built G45-series model. Here’s what this kitted-out crossover will cost you…

- Rugged package now available for X3 20d xDrive
- Adds R96 000 to the X3 20d xDrive’s base price
- Adaptive suspension, all-terrain tyres and more

Back in February 2025, BMW Group South Africa hinted it planned to offer an adventure-ready version of the G45-series X3, showing off a concept vehicle at a local media event. And now the production version has quietly hit the market, badged as the BMW X3 Rugged.

Thanks to a friendly heads-up from the seasoned vehicle-information specialists over at duoporta.com, we can confirm the new BMW X3 20d xDrive Rugged is priced from R1 232 417. The new package appears to be available exclusively in conjunction with the German brand’s 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine.

As confirmed by BMW’s local configurator, the fresh “Rugged” package effectively adds R96 000 to the Rosslyn-built X3 20d xDrive’s base price of R1 136 417, which takes us to the figure above. So, what do you score for the extra outlay?

Well, the package includes adaptive suspension (an otherwise R22 000 option) along with 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/60 R18 all-terrain General Grabber tyres (rather than the standard 19-inch items shod with road-biased 245/50 R19 rubber). It’s not yet clear the exact impact these changes have on the X3’s ground clearance.

BMW iX3 drives over 1,000 km on public roads without recharging

Stopping for a charge is often described as one of the worst downsides for an EV over an ICE vehicle. However, BMW has set out on a mission to prove you don’t even need to stop on longer journeys with an EV.

In a video experiment by BMW, six employees of the company embark on a mission to drive the new BMW iX3 over 1,000 km from Debrecen, Hungary to Munich, Germany. The locations are not random - Debrecen is where the iX3 is manufactured and Munich is where BMW is headquartered.

In the video, they admit that the result is exaggerated and that they needed to stray away from regular driving habits like driving on highways or going through traffic lights. Therefore, a special route, optimized for efficiency, was planned before the drive in order to ensure maximal efficiency.

The distance between the two locations is a little over 900 km if you take the shortest route. However, that would drain the battery much quicker. For a more realistic range test of the BMW iX3 we will conduct our own testing once we get our hands on one in the beginning of next year.

As the most efficient way is 992 km in length, the guys at BMW decided to stretch it up just a bit to pass the coveted 1,000 km mark. The new route goes through other important cities for the development of the iX3 along the way and is now 1,007 km long.
