2022 BMW iX3 Confirmed for SA in 2022

The German carmaker has shared details of its updated 2022 BMW iX3, which is basically an all-electric version of the X3 SUV.

Whether we like it or not, the electric car era marches on and BMW SA has confirmed its 2022 BMW iX3 will be arriving in South Africa in the first quarter of 2022. The BMW X3, on which the iX3 is based, is the first BMW model that’s available in either petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric guise.

The all-electric BMW iX3 was first revealed in the middle of 2020 and while it was initially earmarked for an SA introduction, that appears to have fallen away in favour of the updated 2022 BMW iX3. The updates are significant and while visually, there’s only the smallest of changes with fresh design accents on the nose, a larger kidney grille, revised headlights and 3D LED rear lights. Inside, there’s a new 12.3-inch dashboard, new control panel for the gear selector, new sport seats and customers can give their iX3 the M Sport package.

Internationally, there are 2 trim levels to choose from: Inspiring and Impressive. We’ll have to wait for early 2022 to see what the SA-spec BMW iX3 comes with.

Battery-powered X3 arrives in the UK in December

Even though it hasn’t officially arrived in the UK yet, it’s been so long since the iX3 was revealed BMW has had to give it a little tweak to keep it looking fresh. The new car has the same specs as before – 74 kWh (usable) battery, 150kW charging, up to 286 miles of range, 282bhp – but it looks sharper courtesy of new lights and bumpers.

The kidney grille is bigger (obviously), as is the lower air intake. Meanwhile the headlights have been slimmed-down so the iX3 more closely resembles BMW’s other new EVs, the i4 and iX.

The first iX3s arrive in the UK later this year. Prices start at £59,730 for the M Sport version and rise to £62,730 for the M Sport Pro. It is not, therefore, a competitor to the likes of the Volkswagen ID.4, Skoda Enyaq iV and Audi Q4 – it’s too expensive. The iX3 will instead rival the Jaguar I-Pace, Mercedes EQC and Audi e-tron.

 
BMW iX3 facelifted with updated looks just one year after being revealed

The BMW iX3, which was introduced into the Bavarian brands fully electric range just last year, has already been handed a conclusive set of visual and equippment updates. The reason for this early set of revisions is because it still remains part of the overall X3 range which was facelifted just two months ago, three years into its life-cycle.

As to be expected, the updated BMW iX3 has been detailed with a fresh set of design cues that aligns it with the rest of the range. This includes a rejigged front apron with a larger pair of kidney grilles and slimmer headlamps. The rear has been shaped to appear more muscular while three-dimensional LED taillamps aim to create futuristic characteristics. Model-specific accents in BMW i Blue remain at the front and rear.

The new BMW iX3 will be available in South Africa from the first quarter of 2022 with pricing to be confirmed closer to the time.

 
BMW's first all-electric iX3 SUV will be in SA sooner than you think

BMW is further reinforcing its hybrid and electric vehicle portfolio by introducing its all-new iX3 that will go on sale in some markets later in 2021.

BMW South Africa says the iX3 SUV will arrive locally during the first quarter of 2022. Pricing and local model specification will be revealed closer to its time of launch.

Serving as the German automaker's first all-electric SUV, the plan is to bring 25 new vehicles to market, these being PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) and EVs (electric vehicles), by 2023.

The iX3 will be powered by a 74kWh battery that generates 210kW and 400Nm, sent to the rear wheels, enabling it to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds. Its charge is impressive, generating a range of 100km in 10 minutes using a 150kW DC charger, with it offering 460 - 520km on a full charge.

 

Facelifted BMW X3 range pricing detailed for South Africa​


Pricing for the facelifted BMW X3 has been announced for South Africa. The locally built crossover is available with five different engines which can be had with sDrive or xDrive systems.

Kicking the range off is the facelifted BMW X3 sDrive18d with a price tag of R895 658 which sports the brand’s turbodiesel 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine with 110 kW and 350 N.m of torque. If you wish to add the M Sport package to this, the price will increase to R935 658. The 140 kW and 400 N.m state of tune for this engine is applied to the all-wheel drive xDrive20d which bears a price of R997 176 and R1 037 176 with the M Sport option.

The entry-level petrol option for the facelifted BMW X3 is the sDrive20i with an asking price of R939 798. This model uses a turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder mill with a power output of 135 kW and 300 N.m. Selecting the M Sport package on this raises the price to R979 798.

The flagship diesel of the facelifted BMW X3 range is the xDrive30d which is available in M Sport only with a price tag of R1 210 764. This uses a 3,0-litre straight-six unit to deliver 210 kW and 650 N.m.

At the top of the offering is the performance-minded BMW X3 M40i with an asking price of R1 415 042. Here you’ll find the brand’s twin-scroll turbocharged 3,0-litre straight-six mill with a power output of 265 kW and 500 N.m.

 

BMW X3 LCI (2021) Price Announced​

Indicative pricing for the updated BMW X3 has been announced ahead of the vehicle’s showroom debut on the 1st of October 2021.


While it’s always newsworthy when a popular model is updated and there’s pricing, the bigger picture here is BMW’s renewed investment into South Africa.

For those who aren’t aware, BMW has a production facility in Rosslyn, just outside of Pretoria. For many years, it produced the 3 Series sedan for both SA customers and the rest of the world. As the world’s tastes matured into the SUV, this plant shifted production to the X3 SUV.

How much does the BMW X3 LCI cost in South Africa?​

The updated BMW X3 LCI will be built in SA and will be heading to showrooms on the 1st October 2021. The following prices listed below are indicative but include VAT and CO2 tax.

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?​

“BMW's second full-electric car is a little more 'normal', a pragmatic EV that can go a long way on a charge”

After the way-out-there i3 and i8, this is all pretty pragmatic. The iX3 is a mainstream crossover, and can go a long way on a charge.

BMW admits it isn't an off-roader, because few people go off-road. And it doesn't carry the weight and cost of dual motors in pursuit of a crazed 0-62 time, because after one or two trial runs most people find they don't want to be human cannonballs. That said, 0-62 in 6.8 sec is none too shabby by the standards of the diesel crossovers that so many people are happy with.

And those engineering choices mean it wears a lowish price. At least among the premium brands. Mind you, it's arriving at the same time as things like the Mustang Mach-E, the Nissan Ariya and the VW Group's ID.4/Enyaq. People might soon have other questions about what's a good-value electric crossover.

BMW X3 (2021) Launch Review

The X3 has become what the 3 Series was a decade ago – the most important model in BMW SA’s lineup. However, the SUV game keeps developing at a rapid rate and, since this generation of BMW’s executive SUV arrived on our shores late in 2017, several rival offerings have joined the fray. Is the revised X3 still at – or at least near – the top of its segment? We travelled to the Highveld to drive the latest iteration of the locally produced Bimmer at its media launch.

Every new-car price list appears to be a bit of a shock to the system, but BMW has priced the facelifted X3 in line with its rivals and considering the increased standard spec levels, this updated model isn’t much more expensive than the pre-facelift version. All prices include a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.

Summary

The facelifted BMW X3 is another excellent SUV in a segment where all of its rivals are rather good too, except maybe the now long-in-the-tooth Mercedes-Benz GLC. The X3 package certainly focuses on the locally produced model’s on-road manners, almost to the point where you would be hard-pressed to tell its dynamic ability apart from that of a sedan. The bottom end of the current lineup probably lacks some of that premium performance buyers would want when they’re forking out north of R900k for an Executive SUV, but it will always be a good choice because of BMW’s reputation for sterling after-sales service.

What’s more, the introduction of the subscription model for options may just be the gold star on the X3’s bonnet that could entice a “swing buyer” to choose the BMW over one of its rivals. The knowledge that they can continually improve and update their car over the course of their ownership period will surely be a tempting sweetener.

In summary

The locally built BMW X3 is exported to 30 global markets, and it has gone on to become a worldwide best-seller for the German automaker. This success - and its foresight - is what drove BMW's decision to produce the SUV locally. As such, production volumes have seen steady increases in South Africa, with the local arm looking to increase the volume over the next two years.

The updated X3 may have undergone subtle updates, but it was enough to reaffirm it as the carmaker's leading vehicle. And in South Africa, BMW's production legacy continues - building on a history that began in 1973.

 
DRIVEN: Updated BMW X3 remains a winning formula

VERDICT

Overall, the BMW X3 remains a winning formula and the refresh has just modernised the overall package ever so slightly. Both the X3 20d and the M40i impressed with decent ride quality, features and performance. I will still opt for the 30d model, however the 20d will most probably be the popular offering within the range.

Should I buy one?

When we subjected the third-generation X3 to our full road test in 2018, our suggestions for improvement centred on making the powertrain more refined and the equipment levels more generous. BMW has addressed both of those points with this facelift, while also adding some extra sheen and polish.

Those improvements allow the hugely successful X3 to keep pace with the likes of the Audi Q5 and Land Rover Discovery Sport in the hugely competitive premium family SUV market. The sort of high-mileage drivers for whom a diesel powertrain still makes sense will find much to enjoy with this 30d model, although it might well be worth considering the saving available with the cheaper but still potent 20d.

Only 10 examples of this 626bhp Manhart-tuned BMW X3M will ever exist

So, be quick or you’re going to be stuck with JUST 503 factory horsepower

Weird how the world works. Often we will bring you news of some preposterously tuned new SUV and wonder, quietly, just who in the world would decide to buy an 800bhp Brabus Mercedes GLE, for example.

But then German tuners Manhart come along with a reasonably tasteful and seemingly sensible upgrade for BMW’s hard-riding X3M, and then decide to only make ten of then. Yep, 10.

Welcome to the new Manhart MHX3 600. Which is a big fat lie. This doesn’t have 600 horsepower. Neine. The 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six has been boosted from the 503bhp you get in the X3M Competition, to 626bhp.

All of this apparently comes from some new engine computer code, and a freer-flowing stainless steel exhaust.

22-inch rims – from Alpina, oddly – are fitted under a massive 30mm ride-height chop. And then, in comes the carbon fibre fairy godmother. She’s waved her weave-wand at the mirror caps, splitter, diffuser, and steering wheel.
