Brexit: Businesses 'frustrated' as government rejects plea to loosen visa rules for lorry drivers amid supply chain crisis

In response to calls to make it easier for EU nationals to drive HGVs in the UK, the business secretary suggested employers should invest in UK-based workers instead.

Logistics UK and the British Retail Consortium wrote to Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng last week, urging the government to help ease the immediate challenges by granting temporary visas to EU drivers.

In a response, seen by Sky News, Mr Kwarteng says HGV drivers are not sufficiently skilled to meet visa requirements and companies should focus on training and recruiting British staff.

Shows how dumb the guy is, he really thinks they can recruit, train and get licences for thousands of drivers in a couple of months? Those drivers are needed now, not in 2023.

Good, local chicken shops are so hard to find in London. I swear there are more here than off licences! No way of knowing which is actually going to be worth it.

The driver shortage isn't new, and has been going on for years. Yes, this visa issue for foreign drivers is a farce, but the local issue is much bigger I reckon over the long term. If you've been in the game for a while you're going to do alright, but starting out the pay (for what you have to do daily) is disgusting. And it's the biggest companies that have traditionally paid the worst.

Loads of videos like this by actual drivers, and comments on them all complain about the same things: bad pay, ridiculous hours, being treated like **** by customers, unpaid breaks within the vicinity of the truck, etc.

So then anyone with intelligence would realise that temporary visas (say a 3 year max) are the answer NOW, with the understanding that these visas will taper off with time forcing the companies to recruit and train locals. (let’s not mention test, because covid and OTT policies have paralysed the driver testing system).

Unfortunately Kwasi is not blessed with sufficient intelligence and his boss doesn’t really care.

It sounds like locals don't want to be truck drivers. According to this twitter thread anyway, which admittedly doesn't necessarily mean anything but it's an interesting read

Definitely not something millenials want to do, along with a number other professions. Pay is crap, hours are worse. From the local vs foreign standpoint, it may be worth it money-wise for someone from the Eastern bloc, but still not enough to entice someone from an estate. Of course, the former now has a LOT of red tape, so we are where we are.

Not to mention most towns, villages and cities aren’t built to accommodate HGV’s. It must be an absolute nightmare to drive one.

Brexit ....... or global gas shortage and energy prices surging. Gonna go with the latter. I'd rather blame the real brexit stuff on brexit and not pin global events on it.

Not completely unrelated
Boris Johnson and Michael Gove promised lower fuel bills for households once Britain left the EU. Gas prices in Europe are also at record highs, but countries in the EU’s internal energy market trade efficiently with each other using linked auctions that balance prices across the bloc. The UK, having decoupled its auctions from Europe, could in theory get cheaper energy than anywhere else – if energy was really cheap. But it isn’t, so the UK is more exposed to high prices.

Brexit definitely having an impact.

This thread does a good job of going through some of the details. Essentially they knew it was a possibility to have these shortages, however still ended up stripping some of the UK's storage capacity because protecting the financial elite was a favourable choice.
