The BYD (EV) Thread

BYD is gearing up for global electric pickup launch

The electric vehicle revolution has shown no signs of slowing down, and Chinese automaker BYD is one of the major players in charge. BYD is known for its successful electric passenger vehicles and is ready to leave its mark on the pickup truck market with a hotly anticipated all-electric model.

Leaked images suggest that BYD's first electric pickup truck could launch globally before the end of 2024. The model appears to rival the popular Toyota Hilux in size, positioned within the midsize to full-size pickup segment.

This would be a pivotal moment for BYD if the rumors prove true. While the company thrives in the Chinese EV market and continues expanding its reach worldwide, it has yet to venture into the electric pickup space. BYD's electric pickup truck faces fierce competition from established models and numerous upcoming models from American automakers like Ford, GMC, Rivian, and even Tesla.

This isn't surprising—the EV market is dynamic and highly competitive. In late 2023, BYD briefly held the global EV sales crown, surpassing Tesla. In 2024, BYD remained a dominant EV player, even as Tesla reclaimed its top position following solid (even if less than expected) sales numbers.

All-Electric BYD Bakkie in Development

The BYD bakkie is currently in development and some official spy shots have emerged, giving us a preview of what’s to come.

Electric car giant BYD is working on a double-cab bakkie. The BYD bakkie range will comprise a plug-in hybrid model and then a fully electric derivative. Initial reports suggest a reveal and launch in selected markets will take place in 2024.

The double-cab market has started entering the electric era, with the Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid slated for production in South Africa in 2024, the Toyota Hilux mild hybrid sales have begun and Isuzu has confirmed a fully-electric D-Max.
