The BYD (EV) Thread

Cool car. Set in a relatives one for a few days while overseas .software could be better but love the
music inspired interior where even strings holding the stuff in the doors can be plucked to make music

Was also nice to see car being charged from wall plug. Two overnights to fully charge from a 10-16A plug socket.

BYD's first experience center opens in Wuhan

BYD wanted to open an experience center for a while but it wasn’t going to be an easy task. With the company’s portfolio of brands and models expanding rapidly, trying to fit all the vehicles under one roof required some planning. Visitors to Wuhan International Expo Center have the opportunity now to visit the world's first BYD Experience Center.

Spreading over five floors and 6,550 square meters (70,503 sq ft) the facility resembles a gallery more than a vehicle showroom. There are dozens of vehicles on display from every brand that BYD owns. The latest YangWang U8 and YangWang U9 have their own dedicated floor area, and Denza's first vehicles are proudly displayed alongside them.

BYD’s newest F brand will have its own area with its first EV codenamed SF to be unveiled in June. BYD Seagull and Dolphin is sitting next to BYD Frigate 07, but cars are only a part of the display. There are dedicated sections for each one of BYD’s four main business markets - electronics, automotive, new energy, and rail transport.

BYD Atto 3 review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“It drives decently under most circumstances… depressing though it is to say, in this class 'decent' is as good as it gets”

Broadly, we're impressed. The outside is boring, but kids will love the cabin. The screen systems, glass roof, 360-degree cameras, and rotating screen will wow the neighbours.

The battery capacity and max range (just 260 miles) throw up questions, but actually for most people this is a sweet spot as it reduces cost and weight versus a longer-range pack. What family drives for more than three hours non-stop? And at that point they'll be able to top up because rapid-charge infrastructure in Britain is improving by the day. A battery bigger than that would be a waste of money and weight for them. More of a pinch-point for family holidays is the smallish boot.

It drives decently under most circumstances, and, depressing though it is to say, in this class 'decent' is as good as it gets.

Maybe that is fine if you live in a Portapotty like the UK, but that distance will barely get you out the Western Cape. And that likely is the unladen range. What would be the range of that vehicle with 5 passengers+luggge and towing a trailer?
Would probably get you about 150km if you are lucky.

BYD's Yangwang luxury electric sedan spotted for the first time

Yangwang only came to the market a couple of months ago, but the BYD brand doesn’t waste a minute. It already has two electric vehicles out - the tank-like U8 SUV and the supercar U9. It turns out a third vehicle is already in the works, and judging by the recent spy photos, that model is ready for prime time.

The first thing that strikes us is the size of the electric sedan from Yangwang - this thing is huge! It is well over 5 m long, and it sits low - it reminds us of the Lotus Envya. The two seem to have similar proportions. Judging by the size alone, Yangwang is aiming its new sedan at the likes of Mercedes EQS, Porsche Taycan, and BMW i7.

So far all Yangwang vehicles share the same luxury approach mixed with high performance. Both the U8 and U9 are unquestionably luxurious and use the same quad-motor powertrain. If indeed the new addition to the range comes with the same 1,180 hp output, it may be quick enough to challenge Tesla Model S or Lucid Air.

BYD Dolphin brings 265 miles for £26,000 in Europe

Chinese rival to the Peugeot e-208 will follow its Atto 3 sibling to the UK

Chinese manufacturer BYD has confirmed European pricing for its new small car, which will go on sale in the UK later this year.

The new BYD Dolphin will start from €29,990 in mainland Europe, which translates to roughly £26,000 in the UK, with a selection of four trim levels: Active, Boost, Comfort and Design.

Active and Boost trims are available with a 44.9kWh battery. Active cars offer 93bhp and around 211 miles of range, while Boost ups performance to 178bhp but drops range to 188 miles.

Comfort and range-topping Design cars gain a larger, 60.4kWh battery with 265 miles of range and a more powerful, 201bhp electric motor supported by 228lb ft of torque. With this motor, the car can complete 0-62mph in around 7.0sec.

In its highest specification, the BYD Dolphin can charge at up to speeds of 88kW, which takes the the battery from 0-80% in around 29 minutes. Meanwhile, there are four driving modes: Sport, Normal, Economy and Snow.

BYD Song Plus launches in China at lower price than expected

Do you know what they say about an early bird catching a juicy worm? Well, whoever “they” are - they’re wrong. At least it doesn’t work when it comes to BYD and its latest electric SUV, the Song Plus. The pre-sale campaign for the new EV started 10 days ago with quite a few people jumping on the chance of bagging a bit of a discount. Imagine their surprise this morning.

Now, this is an all-new Song Plus - this is the Champion Edition revamped model, BYD’s idea of sneaking in new discounted models rather than cutting prices of the existing portfolio. The Champion Edition models are available across the Song Plus model range, including plug-in hybrid models and pure EVs.

The Song Plus EV Champion Edition comes now in four versions and starts at RMB 169,800 (€22,100), which is exactly RMB 10,000 (€1,300) than it was offered during the pre-sale campaign. The three versions of the Song Plus share the same battery with 520 km CLTC rating, while the top-of-the-range model gets a 605 km rating for RMB for 209,800 (€27,300).

The new version of the Song Plus EV is 70 mm longer and 10 mm taller than the predecessor, and its driving range has been slightly improved. Song Plus EV is part of BYD's Ocean series of vehicles, while the Song Pro and Song Max are part of the Dynasty series. Last month alone saw 102,572 vehicles sold from the Ocean family with 24,329 units of Song Plus included in that number.
