The BYD (EV) Thread

I'm wondering what sort of issues we will see after a few years of use from these BYDs.

It looks good cosmetically.

BYD ready to launch own smart driving system this November

According to the latest reports, Chinese automaker BYD is preparing to launch its own smart driving system. This would be a significant step for the company, which has so far relied on third-party solutions for its advanced driver-assistance systems.

Slated for release as early as November, BYD's own algorithms will power the company's DiPilot smart driving platform.

DiPilot, BYD's proprietary computing platform, will come in various configurations depending on the available processing power. The DiPilot 100, designed for systems with 100 TOPS (trillion operations per second) or less, will use Nvidia's Drive Orin N chip and Horizon Robotics' Journey 5 chip. For more capable vehicles, the DiPilot 300 and DiPilot 600 will leverage the Nvidia Orin X chip, offering up to 508 TOPS of computing power.

The move towards in-house development clearly points to BYD's ambition to control its technological destiny and compete head-to-head with industry giants like Tesla, which has long championed its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems. While BYD has been collaborating with various chip manufacturers, including Nvidia, Horizon Robotics, and Black Sesame Technologies, it has reportedly invested the most effort in developing its own algorithms based on Nvidia's Drive Orin platform, citing its maturity and stability.

The initial rollout of BYD's in-house algorithms will focus on models priced above RMB 200,000 (approximately €25,340). However, the company plans to democratize this technology, aiming to equip vehicles in the RMB 100,000 price range with high-level smart driving capabilities by 2025. This is an ambitious goal, and it could significantly impact the adoption of advanced driver-assistance features in the mass market.

Oppo partners with BYD for joint development of EVs and AI

Not to be outdone by Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant Oppo is looking expand its reach beyond the mobile market. In a recent announcement, Oppo revealed a strategic partnership with BYD to integrate smartphone technology withing its smart car systems. That would let you control various aspects of your BYD electric vehicles directly from your Oppo smartphone.

The first fruit of this partnership is the integration of Oppo's Find X8 series with BYD's Denza Z9 GT sedan. Find X8 owners can now unlock and control certain functions of their Z9 GT, with the potential for deeper integration between smartphones and EVs in the future. This approach mirrors similar strategies adopted by other tech giants, like Huawei and vivo, as companies push to capitalize on the growing synergy between mobile devices and the automotive industry.

BYD Sealion 7 European version detailed, UK to get three versions

BYD announced its mid-size SUV Sealion 7 back in October during the Paris Auto Show 2024 and while it did confirm it's coming to the European market eventually it didn't reveal the details of that version. The car was now officially introduced to the UK, revealing it will come in three versions - Comfort, Design and Excellence.

Starting with the Comfort option, it runs on an 82.5 kWh battery and a single motor, outputting 303 hp. The rated WLTP range is 480 km.

The Design variant adopts the same battery but adds another electric motor for an AWD setup totaling 514 hp. The range drops slightly to 454 km. The DC charging rate is 150 kW for both versions, giving you 80% charge from 10% in 32 minutes.

The top version is called Excellence is also all-wheel drive, but adds a bigger 91.3 kWh battery, while the two motors are the same as on the Design variant. That gives the Excellence an estimated range of 501 km. The DC charging is also higher, at 230 kW, going from 10 to 80% in 24 minutes.

The heat pump is standard across all configurations, along with the V2L function, which lets you use the car's battery to power appliances.
