BYD electric vehicle maker sees sales surge in 2024

BYD (Build Your Dreams), the Chinese hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) maker, saw its sales surge in the second half of 2024 – aided by domestic subsidies aiming to entice drivers to ditch fossil fuel-powered cars.

BYD saw a massive spike towards the end of the year, as it competes with Tesla to be the world’s best-selling electric vehicle maker.

The company says it sold 207,734 EVs in December, taking its 2024 tally to 1.77 million. Overall, it sold 4.25 million passenger cars last year (it stopped manufacturing vehicles powered solely by fossil fuels in 2022).
BYD’s recent gains are being aided by domestic Chinese subsidies aiming to convince drivers to ditch petrol cars – it sells 90% of its vehicles in China.

Tesla maintained a slim lead in EV sales over BYD in 2024, but the Shenzhen-based firm has been closing the gap.

BYD teases Tang L SUV and Han L sedan with advanced LiDAR technology

BYD has just teased two new additions to its lineup: the Tang L SUV and the Han L sedan. These models promise enhanced intelligent driving capabilities, thanks to the inclusion of LiDAR technology. This is a big step for BYD, as LiDAR is not currently featured on any existing Tang or Han models.

Details are still scarce, but the teaser images released by BYD show sleek and modern design, with the LiDAR sensor prominently positioned at the top of the windshield. This sensor is responsible for producing a highly accurate 3D map of the vehicle's surroundings.

The Tang and Han are flagship models in BYD's Dynasty lineup. The Tang is a mid-to-large-size SUV, while the Han is a mid-to-large-size sedan. Both model families offer hybrid (DM-i and DM-p) and pure electric variants.

BYD shatters sales records with over 4 million NEVs sold in 2024

BYD has announced record-breaking new energy vehicle (NEV) sales for December 2024 and the full year. The company sold a staggering 514,809 NEVs in December alone, marking its seventh consecutive month of record sales. That's a 50.95% increase from the same period last year and a 1.58% increase from November 2024. BYD's total sales for 2024 reached an astounding 4.27 million NEVs. That's a 41.26% increase year-on-year.

BYD's success can be attributed to its diverse product portfolio, competitive pricing, and expansion into overseas markets. The company has a huge portfolio of passenger and commercial NEVs and in December it sold a record 509,440 passenger and 5,369 commercial vehicles.

The company's focus on plug-in hybrids has also contributed significantly to its sales growth. In 2024, BYD sold 2,485,378 passenger PHEVs, a 72.83% increase year-on-year. BYD also saw steady growth in its battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment, selling 1,764,992 passenger BEVs in 2024, a 12.08% improvement year-on-year. It's worth pointing out that BYD sold only 25,000 BEVs less than Tesla last year.

BYD's overseas expansion has fueled its sales momentum. The company sold 417,204 units in overseas markets in 2024, a 71.86% increase year-on-year. In December alone, BYD sold 57,154 vehicles overseas, a significant increase from both the previous year and the previous month.

See the self-driving Yangwang U9 jump over obstacles

BYD's all-electric supercar Yangwang U9 is capable of impressive feats of performance - it recently lapped the Nürburgring in a little over 7 minutes and reached 375 km/h top speed. In the most recent promo video, however, BYD showcases the Disus X hydraulic suspension system's capabilities.

The video shows an unmanned Yangwang U9 going at 120 km/h and thanks to its advanced hydraulic suspension system, the car jumps over various obstacles. One of them is a water-filled pothole measuring 2.5 m-long, although the vehicle was able to leap over 6 m.
