The BYD (EV) Thread

That's a Seagull. But yeah. Neat little thing. Tiny bit bigger than a Kia Picanto, for an example most people should be able to relate to.

All in all, not bad I rate. Still... It's about R170k over there. Here... R350k. As usual we pay about double. Bit more than double on the low end. Bit less than double on the high end.

Either the local policies and taxes need to reform, and the local car manufacturing industry pack up. Or SA has to start manufacturing EVs. We are far behind the rest of the world. And falling behind further all the time. Our local industry needs to serve our needs. Not hold us back.

BYD is bringing the all-electric Atto 2 to the UK and Europe

Another day, another electric SUV from China

BYD’s compact SUV, the Yuan Up, is gearing up for a launch in the UK and Europe. Arriving in February, over here it’ll be called the BYD Atto 2. Bless you.

Yep, the car-which-sounds-like-a sneeze is a smidge smaller than its big brother the Atto 3 and from what we can see, promises to be as stylishly packaged. There are sharp front angles, a fancy glass roof and funky figure-of-eight rear lights.

The Atto 2 sits on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 and integrates its famous Blade Battery directly into the chassis. Initially, the car will have a 45.1kWh rated capacity (usable power) pack, powering a 130kW (174bhp) front-mounted motor, allowing up to 194 miles of range. BYD intends to break out a bigger battery later in the year.

Inside that 2.6m wheelbase there's a flat floor and a 400-litre boot capacity, along with the usual suspects – upholstered seats? Check. A couple of digital screens? Check. Cupholders? You betcha.

BYD Atto 2 is coming to Europe

BYD has unveiled the latest addition to its European EV lineup. The new Atto 2 is a compact crossover set to rival popular models like the Vauxhall Frontera and Renault 4, offering a compelling blend of technology, practicality, and affordability.

The Atto 2 is a smaller sibling of the Atto 3, measuring 4.31 m long, 1.83 m wide, and 1.68 m tall. It's slightly longer and taller than a Volkswagen ID.3, but despite its compact size, the Atto 2 comfortably seats five and boasts a 400 l trunk.

The latest EV entrant from BYD packs a 174-horsepower front-wheel-drive electric motor powered by a 45.1 kWh battery pack. This setup promises 312 km of range, making it suitable for both city commutes and longer journeys. The Atto 2 is built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0, which we already know from the BYD Dolphin hatchback. However, the Atto 2 is the first compact BYD model to feature the cell-to-body (CTB) design. This design not only improves structural integrity but also allows for a more spacious interior.

In terms of design, the Atto 2 adopts a more conventional approach compared to some of its rivals. It has classic headlights and a black element between them, reminiscent of a traditional grille. The rear has an LED strip that connects the two taillights - BYD's visual signature.

Riding On Track In A BYD Seal Confirmed That Chinese Cars Are Ready For Prime Time

Everyone should get prepared for the Chinese automaker takeover

During last weekend’s Formula E action at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, I was given an opportunity to ride along in the passenger’s seat of a brand-new BYD Seal 3.8S performance model. The whole experience lasted maybe ten minutes from getting in the car to stepping out, and the speed of the lap was definitely geared more toward impressing well-to-do normies in the luxury suites, but it was certainly eye-opening for me. It wasn’t all that long ago that BYD was a joke in the industry, but it’s become a powerhouse that shouldn’t be looked down upon. Watch your ass, Tesla, this thing is coming to eat your lunch.

The Seal 3.8S is thusly named as a result of its 3.8-second 0-60 time. It isn’t quite as quick as a Tesla Model 3 Performance yet, but the development cycle coming out of China right now is basically a vertical line, so it won’t be long. This machine has a 215 horsepower motor up front and a 308 horsepower motor at the back, good for 523 combined. That’s more than enough to have fun with, for real.

BYD made its North American debut at the Detroit Auto Show in 2009, promising to deliver a vehicle to the U.S. market by the end of 2010. Back then the automaker was shuffled into the corner of the basement of Cobo Hall, and its battery-electric e6 CUV with 205 miles of range and questionable fit and finish levels would have beaten the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S to market. It has been 15 years since that promise and BYD still doesn’t sell any consumer-grade vehicles in the U.S.

Where Is BYD? Global Powerhouse Almost Nowhere In SA

Global powerhouse BYD has taken the world by storm, but it barely features in South Africa. Yet, they have big plans for 2025…

BYD, or Build Your Dreams, to use its full name, is a global leader when it comes to new energy vehicles (NEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs). But in South Africa, they are not making an impact. Is this something worth discussing, though?

Firstly, BYD is big. And when I say big, I mean that they are the world’s biggest vehicle seller. In 2024, the Chinese giant sold more than 4.2 million NEVs worldwide – an increase of 41.26% over 2023! This translates to an average of around 356 012 vehicles per month! Of course, the majority of these sales occurred in China, but even in other parts of the world, including the Middle East and Europe, the brand is growing.

Locally, though, the image is dark.

In October 2024, with the launch of the Seal all-electric sedan, BYD’s sales tally has been a few hundred vehicles in South Africa. While this does not sound too bad, do keep in mind that the brand has been operating in South Africa since June 2023! This is scary, because other Chinese brands like Omoda and Jaecoo, which are also new entrants, have exploded onto the local scene. This contradicts BYD’s almost silent, under-the-radar approach.

To put BYD’s SA situation in perspective: If, for instance, ‘a few hundred’ vehicles are 200 units, it means that between June 2023 and December 2024 – 19 months – an average of 10.5 new vehicles were sold per month. If it’s 500 new vehicles over 19 months, then it’s a slightly better, but still grim, 26.3 vehicles per month. Going on the premise that BYD sold 26 cars in December 2024, that is a contribution of 0.01% to the group’s global sales figure of 509 440 units in the last month of the year!

BYD SA’s current EV portfolio consists of:

Dolphin Standard range: R539 900
Dolphin Extended Range: R599 900
Atto 3 Standard Range: R768 000
Atto 3 Extended Range: R835 000
Seal Extended Range: R999 900
Seal AWD Performance: R1 199 900

All models ship standard with a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan, a 5-year/100 000 vehicle warranty, and an 8-year/150 000 km battery warranty.
